New plants need regular water to establish strong roots, but that does not mean you need sprinklers running every day. Hand watering, drip irrigation, and soaker hoses are some of the best ways to water during restrictions because they deliver water right where the plant needs it most. In many areas with stage 1 drought, you can still water with these applications, provided it occurs outside of peak evaporation times (typically 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Here’s how:
Water early in the morning or later in the evening to reduce evaporation. Add a top dressing around plants to help hold moisture and keep roots cooler.

Create a schedule:
Weeks 1 to 2: Water daily or every other day to keep the soil evenly moist while roots get established.

Weeks 3 to 12: Start spacing out watering every few days and let the top layer of soil dry slightly between waterings.

After 12 weeks: Once established, switch to deep watering about once a week to encourage stronger roots.

If you are planning to create a larger scale project, check with your local water provider. You may be able to get an exemption for temporary establishment permits.

Last night’s snow might look alarming, but many hardy perennials are built for exactly this kind of weather.

Plants like Arenaria alfacarensis are naturally adapted to cold nights, late spring snow, and harsh alpine conditions. Their compact growth helps protect them from temperature swings, making them incredibly resilient in rock gardens and water-wise landscapes.

A little snow doesn’t mean disaster — for the right perennial, it’s just another spring day in.

A camera in hand.
A future nature lover discovering beauty one flower at a time.

The best gardens do more than fill a space — they inspire curiosity, slow us down, and connect us to the world around us. At Desert Blooms, we grow plants that bring that feeling home while thriving with less water and long-lasting beauty.

Healthy plants start below the surface.

Those white, fuzzy roots you see when you unbox your plants? That’s exactly what you want.

They’re a sign your plant is actively growing and ready to thrive.

Those fine root hairs are:
• Absorbing water and nutrients efficiently
• Driving fresh, healthy growth
• Key to fast establishment in your garden

Strong roots = stronger plants, better performance, and long-term success—especially in tough, water-wise conditions.

At Desert Blooms, we focus on what matters most first: root health. Because that’s what determines how your plants handle heat, drought, and everything in between.
