We found this plant tag in the garden.

The original tag either blew away in the wind, faded in the sun, or was borrowed by a curious gardener… so here’s another one.

New plants need regular water to establish strong roots, but that does not mean you need sprinklers running every day. Hand watering, drip irrigation, and soaker hoses are some of the best ways to water during restrictions because they deliver water right where the plant needs it most. In many areas with stage 1 drought, you can still water with these applications, provided it occurs outside of peak evaporation times (typically 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Here’s how:
Water early in the morning or later in the evening to reduce evaporation. Add a top dressing around plants to help hold moisture and keep roots cooler.

Create a schedule:
Weeks 1 to 2: Water daily or every other day to keep the soil evenly moist while roots get established.

Weeks 3 to 12: Start spacing out watering every few days and let the top layer of soil dry slightly between waterings.

After 12 weeks: Once established, switch to deep watering about once a week to encourage stronger roots.

If you are planning to create a larger scale project, check with your local water provider. You may be able to get an exemption for temporary establishment permits.
