Free Gardening class! This Thursday May 14th at the Rocky Mountain Pumpkin Ranch on Route 66 in Longmont. Bring all your questions! After a little time to chat in the beginning, we’ll have a Q&A starting at 10:30 and then we will have plenty of time to chat about all different topics like planting plans, what varieties to plant, pests and diseases (👎😝), trellising, weather, conserving water, pollinators, and my favorite - how to create healthy soil. I would so love to see you. This is a community event so it will be more organic (no pun intended lol) and less structured.

More info re: protecting your garden, below.
1. If you are going to cover your garden with an old blanket, put buckets or bowls over taller plants like tomatoes or peppers so they don’t break under the weight of the blankets
2. On the night of the hard freeze, boil water and put it in unbreakable glass bottles next to your plants under the buckets which are under the blankets. They will hopefully keep the plants warm in the night.
3. If you get walls of water make sure the top is closed so the air doesn’t get in.
4. If you go with the pvc and poly low tunnel, you can get a small thermostatic heater from ace hardware that will turn on as needed in your tunnel. Just make sure that you treat this like Christmas lights and protect the cables from the elements.
5. For plants like peonies - use tomato cages and cover with sheets or old blankets to keep them from breaking.
6. Again - it might be easier to transplant seedlings back into pots. Swiss chard, kale, spinach etc should all be okay if they are covered but plants like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant or annual flowers, might benefit from being transplanted into pots and then gently replanted next week. Feel free to text me with any questions. I will help if I can! 303.746.5675

Don’t throw your seed away because Google or someone tells you to. And if you are too tired to test germination with a damp coffee filter (which works very well inside a clear plastic bag in a place without direct sunlight) then just sow them in a tray like this (unless they are root veg and that won’t work). Old seed so often surprises us because Mother Nature is awesome.
