So recently I have been seeing an odd situation with Behr paints. While I don't mean to put them down I will say that even Sherwin Williams cheap paint is IMHO better than Behr's best. I've always said that, and have over 30+ years of painting experience behind me to back that statement up.
The issue is the mid-range priced Behr paint (around $40.00 at the hardware store) is going bad within 3 years. I've seen this happening at a whole lot of places that I've been asked to paint and the customer tells me "Here! I already have the paint"!. What's going on is that it is turning to sludge. Home Depot "experts" will say "Yea, sounds like it oxidized”.
Yea, the customer just wasted $200.00+ dollars on paint that went bad a long time ago, and all the while it was taking up space in their basement, and now they have to spend another $200.00 to replace it.
"I am sorry, Mam, but I had nothing to do with that paint, and it is unusable." Once those words come out of my mouth it is a 50/50 chance that the customer will turn me away from the job or put it off until they can "afford" it.
Now, for the most part, these cans of paint were stored inside and never froze up. So we can check that off our list.
The lids were on airtight.( Point in fact, if you left the can of paint open, with no lid, on a kitchen counter for an entire year, you would still be able to peel/cut off the hardened paint skin and use what is only ½ inch below it. So no, I ain't buying that one either.)
I don't know what exactly is going on but I suspect the chemicals that they claim is primer are hardening up and causing it to sludge up like peanut butter, regardless of how long the can was opened. And guess what? you cant get a replacement after only 3 years ago.
On top of this, there was a price surge recently in the paint from all manufacturers, so If you have any of this type of paint, Behr with primer mixed in- I would check it out and make sure that it is still any good.
Please remember folks, I charge more per hour on labor than that entire can of paint costs. Typically, I spend longer time using those products and you will actually spend more money for me to use it than if I use a more reputable manufacturer such as Diamond Vogle or Benjamin More.
I would also like to say that mixing primer with paint defeats the purpose of both products. Primer is used to prepare a surface to accept paint. Mixing them together defeats the purpose of both. “Why do they make it then?” you ask..Well, why do Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Target, or any of those other stores even exist?
So they can flood the market with a lower price product, and control the market. They want you to come back and buy more when the last can goes bad which is why they only have a very limited short time warrantee on Behr Products.
Buy whatever brand of paint that you want, but definitely try to talk to an experienced painter before you decide to tackle that project, and go into it with a better understanding.
I am always happy to answer questions.
