It's hot out there stay hydrated!

Covid certainly has taken its toll on the world.
I got fully vaccinated by the end of May 2021.
I still do my best to social distance and wear masks when appropriate.
But even though I am fully vaccinated as I know i can still catch it and spread it.

This morning I learned that I may have been exposed. It's too early to test but in light of this information I will not be working for the rest of the week until I get tested on Friday. Today is Tuesday.

This will give my body ample time to produce antibodies if I in fact have the virus. The test results will be more accurate this way.

Stay safe everyone!

Happy New
Year!

So recently I have been seeing an odd situation with Behr paints. While I don't mean to put them down I will say that even Sherwin Williams cheap paint is IMHO better than Behr's best. I've always said that, and have over 30+ years of painting experience behind me to back that statement up.

The issue is the mid-range priced Behr paint (around $40.00 at the hardware store) is going bad within 3 years. I've seen this happening at a whole lot of places that I've been asked to paint and the customer tells me "Here! I already have the paint"!. What's going on is that it is turning to sludge. Home Depot "experts" will say "Yea, sounds like it oxidized”.

Yea, the customer just wasted $200.00+ dollars on paint that went bad a long time ago, and all the while it was taking up space in their basement, and now they have to spend another $200.00 to replace it.

"I am sorry, Mam, but I had nothing to do with that paint, and it is unusable." Once those words come out of my mouth it is a 50/50 chance that the customer will turn me away from the job or put it off until they can "afford" it.

Now, for the most part, these cans of paint were stored inside and never froze up. So we can check that off our list.
The lids were on airtight.( Point in fact, if you left the can of paint open, with no lid, on a kitchen counter for an entire year, you would still be able to peel/cut off the hardened paint skin and use what is only ½ inch below it. So no, I ain't buying that one either.)

I don't know what exactly is going on but I suspect the chemicals that they claim is primer are hardening up and causing it to sludge up like peanut butter, regardless of how long the can was opened. And guess what? you cant get a replacement after only 3 years ago.

On top of this, there was a price surge recently in the paint from all manufacturers, so If you have any of this type of paint, Behr with primer mixed in- I would check it out and make sure that it is still any good.

Please remember folks, I charge more per hour on labor than that entire can of paint costs. Typically, I spend longer time using those products and you will actually spend more money for me to use it than if I use a more reputable manufacturer such as Diamond Vogle or Benjamin More.

I would also like to say that mixing primer with paint defeats the purpose of both products. Primer is used to prepare a surface to accept paint. Mixing them together defeats the purpose of both. “Why do they make it then?” you ask..Well, why do Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Target, or any of those other stores even exist?

So they can flood the market with a lower price product, and control the market. They want you to come back and buy more when the last can goes bad which is why they only have a very limited short time warrantee on Behr Products.

Buy whatever brand of paint that you want, but definitely try to talk to an experienced painter before you decide to tackle that project, and go into it with a better understanding.

I am always happy to answer questions.

The St. Vrain Creek watershed is critical to maintaining the health, biodiversity, character, and economy of communities within the region including Lyons and Longmont. The creek is also home to a diverse population of native fish, provides recreational uses, has its headwaters in Rocky Mountain National Park and the Indian Peaks Wilderness, and its confluence in a county that is the largest agricultural economic producing county in Colorado. With such a wide range of uses and intense focus of study, the St. Vrain poses an excellent opportunity to balance river health with water users’ needs through completion of a stream management plan.

Colorado’s Water Plan’s (“CWP”) objective is to cover 80 percent of the locally prioritized lists of rivers with Stream Management Plans (“SMP”). CWP used the South Platte Basin Implementation Plan (“BIP”) to help inform this measurable objective. The South Platte BIP studied a reach of St. Vrain Creek for environmental and recreational opportunities and concluded streamflows may be present to achieve desired outcomes; however, the BIP further concluded “studies that relate the channel form and function to the streamflows can make assessment of flows in the area more robust”, and in recognition of the significant post-flood stream restoration activities “assessments should be made regarding the requirements of aquatic and riparian ecosystems in the area…”.

Late last year, St. Vrain and Left Hand Water Conservancy District (“District”) hosted several stakeholder meetings that determined an interest in pursuing a SMP. In late 2017, the District with input from the stakeholder group including St. Vrain Chapter Trout Unlimited submitted a Watershed Restoration Program – Stream Management Plan Grant (“SMP”) application, to the Colorado Water Conservation Board and was awarded $150,000. The District also submitted a Water Supply Reserve Fund Grant application, Executive summary, Exhibit A – Scope of Work, and Exhibit B – Existing Studies Summary to the South Platte Basin Roundtable and was awarded $50,000. St. Vrain Chapter was one of several stakeholders that contributed cash match funds. Our chapter contributed $5000.

The SMP will take place in two phases over approximately five years. The overall goal of the SMP is to build upon the already completed extensive studies in the basin to collaboratively identify projects and management strategies that will transition stakeholders from flood recovery to stream health projects that improve environmental conditions in the river while also meeting water users’ current and future needs and are aligned with private property rights and the prior appropriation system.

This is an exciting opportunity for our community! Now you have an opportunity to contribute to the process.

The Flyer (click to view) is an announcement for two upcoming opportunities to have your voices heard in this SMP process. This won't be the only opportunity to engage, but as a friend of the St. Vrain Creek, we wanted you to hear about this opportunity to engage. The Flyer also includes a link to an online survey that allows you to provide input from the comfort of home.

There are 2 upcoming events to learn more and engage:
