Building a simple wooden screen hides ugly utility boxes and eliminates the frustrating chore of w**d whacking around dangerous electrical pipes.

Electric meters and thick conduit pipes are massive eyesores that ruin the curb appeal of an otherwise beautiful home. Mowing grass right up to the foundation is a constant headache because standard mower decks cannot reach the tight corners. Using a string trimmer near live wires is dangerous and often damages the plastic covers on your utility boxes. Creating a dedicated garden bed with a custom wooden screen completely hides the ugly metal boxes while keeping the area accessible for the meter reader. This project turns a forgotten utility wall into a high end landscaping feature that makes your entire property look beautifully finished.

Start by mapping out a wide curved garden bed using a flexible garden hose to find the most natural shape. Dig out the grass to a depth of three inches and lay down heavy duty landscape fabric to prevent w**ds from taking over your new soil. Build a freestanding privacy screen using pressure treated four by four posts set in two feet of quick setting concrete. Attach vertical cedar slats painted white to match your house siding while leaving small gaps so the utility workers can still read the meters easily. Edge the front of the dirt with natural fieldstones to create a crisp border that keeps your dark hardwood mulch from washing away into the grass.

Plant fragrant purple Hidcote lavender and green velvet boxwoods along the stone border to create a soft layer of beautiful color. Add white Bobo hydrangeas and dark purple Palace Purple coral bells in the middle to fill the space with thick foliage. Plant tall Karl Foerster ornamental grass on the far edges to frame the wooden screen and draw the eye away from the house corners. Train a white climbing clematis vine to grow directly up the wooden slats for a classic cottage garden look.

Check the local building codes in your town to find out exactly how much clearance you must leave between a new wooden screen and your main electrical boxes before you start digging holes.
