This is why designers love an Oushak.

The palette is soft, faded, almost washed-out by design. That means it doesn’t compete with anything you put on top of it. Wood tones, brass, velvet, bold furniture silhouettes all read better against an Oushak because the rug is doing quiet work in the background, not fighting for attention.

I told myself I’d never sell this one. It was the first antique rug my wife ever fell in love with.

So when Sheryl Crow walked into the showroom and asked to see the rug in this book, the very one, I knew exactly where this was headed, and I knew it wouldn’t be easy.

She looked at it and said she needed to see it in her house.

So I went home and convinced my wife to let me take it, just to show her, I promised. But once that rug was in Sheryl’s home, she would not let me leave with it. I was stuck.

The hardest part came after: earning my wife’s forgiveness for selling the one rug she loved most.

She forgave me, eventually. But I don’t think I’ll ever live this one down.
