Today we are excited to share the 2025 issue of “The Narrative,” ’s annual magazine celebrating our work and our people.

This year, we reflect on how we strive to impact lives in positive ways in support of our Human by Design ethos. The issue highlights our approach to earning the JUST label—one of only eight large AEC firms to do so—in addition to project spotlights for an exceptional new high school in Virginia and a new symphony hall in China, ideas on carbon reduction strategies, a look at accessibility challenges in our cities, challenges in designing environments to support aging with dignity, an introduction to our Los Angeles design studio, a peek at the art of model making, and much more.

Special thanks to our editorial and production team: Trish Donnally, Abby Bussel, Emily Bamford, Jennica Deely, Heather Jauregui, Pamela Mosher, Tania Phillips, Jennifer Sergent, Brooke Sullivan, Kim Rader, Sarah Mechling, and Nick Pugliesi.

Our OWU Library Complex and Arts Arena project aims to transform the university campus by activating the JAYwalk with a dynamic hub for learning, creativity, and community engagement. This visionary plan, spearheaded by President Matt VandenBerg, will create a modern space featuring state-of-the-art library facilities, artistic venues, dining options, student services, and faculty development centers. Through strategic partnerships with the local community, OWU seeks to establish a model town-gown collaboration, fostering innovation and enhancing the academic and cultural experience for all stakeholders. The university has raised a record-breaking $50 million in just three months to fund the project, which is expected to begin its construction phase before fall and take up to 18 months to complete. Perkins Eastman leading the design of the project, working in collaboration with Ohio-based Levin Porter Architects.

To celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month, our LA office hosted a lunch featuring rice as the centerpiece of the many diverse dishes from across Asia and the Pacific Islands that are enjoyed with it. We made an effort to include examples of the cuisine from a wide range of regions: Central, East, South, Southeast, and Western Asia, as well as the Pacific Islands.

Many of us tried new tastes, sparking conversations about regional ingredients, flavors, and traditions. After lunch, we played a game identifying countries in that region on a map and discovered that some of us have a surprisingly strong knowledge of geography.

Thank you to everyone who contributed. It was a meaningful way to celebrate AANHPI heritage and spend time together away from our desks.

As our Estancia High School Theater project is near completion, it was time for a site visit. Led by Senior Associate Sara Loy, we toured the facility from the glass curtainwall lobby to the roof, looking into the (currently) scaffold filled 350-seat theater from several levels and backstage, the flexible black box theater, and performer support and tech spaces. Budding thespians, staff and the community will soon be provided with a new professional-level theatrical venue. The opening is scheduled for the start of the 2025 fall semester.

Today we celebrate the 90th anniversary of one of our favorite projects: Griffith Observatory. Completed in 1935, the Observatory is one of Los Angeles's cultural and architectural icons and is the most visited public observatory in the world, with 1.6 million visitors yearly. In 2006, Pfeiffer, now part of Perkins Eastman, completed a four-year-long renovation and expansion of the structure, adding 39,600 square feet underground to preserve the Observatory's historic appearance. Included in the expansion were a gift shop; the 202-seat Leonard Nimoy theater; new exhibit areas; the Gottlieb Transit Corridor—a monumental glass-walled passageway that tracks the motions of the sun, moon, and stars; and the Café at the End of the Universe, built into the eastern slope. The detailed renovation also restored the famous Hugo Ballin murals the Central Rotunda. A year-long celebration is planned with guest lectures, star parties, new programs and exhibits.

We just visited the Crewe Center for the Arts,  our new performing arts project at the University of Southern Maine, to see that construction is progressing well. The center, which will provide top notch acoustical performance and rehearsal spaces for musical training, is on track to open for the fall semester this year.

Earlier this month, principal Alberto Cavallero, and senior associate Sara Loy, along with the team from our Shanghai studio, visited Wuxi, China, to observe the progress made on the construction of the Wuxi Symphony Hall Complex project. The team also visited the impressive 1:10 scale acoustical testing model for the Symphony Hall, then went out to enjoy the delights of Shanghai, the delicious cuisine and vibrant culture, including the stunning display of lanterns at Yuyuan Garden. The Wuxi Symphony Hall is on track for completion by mid-December, allowing the New Year’s concert on January 1, 2026, to take place as scheduled. We’re thrilled to witness this iconic cultural venue come to life and will share more updates as we approach the grand opening.
