Summer is descending in smoke, climate change is here, life’s breath exhales to fall, the magic of awareness grows sharp again, and here is a black sunflower. We live on a wild, painful planet, rocketing through space, loving as gently as we can. Stay hydrated.

Hello everyone,
I am taking some time in the mountains this summer while I relocate to my homelands of West Marin in Northern California. My time in the dusty sage fields of Southern California has been rich, and I will continue to venture south for projects in the winter months. But now I am expanding to the redwoods and oathills that I played in as a kid. Until September I will be not be taking on new projects anywhere in the state, instead soaking up the season. From then on, I will be mostly be working in Sonoma and Marin county, and will be available for projects in Los Angeles from November to April. Thank you all, and happy gardening :)

Shots from a recent design and install growing in very nicely. We pulled 4” concrete from the yard and laid stones, DG paths, and wove in a wild native and edible garden. So many little details. Artichokes and fruit trees, funky rare natives, pollinators, and black sunflowers! Thanks to for the corten stepwork, for the veggie bed cedar, and for the plants, and for the beautiful brass lighting. Can’t wait to watch it mature and fill in!

Very stoked to have planted out the Kora at :) this circumambulation was put in with 2 years ago and now we finished the job of planting around the temple. Each direction is planted (with mostly CA natives) to correspond to four colors of the Tibetan mandala, with particular emphasis on flower and fragrance to power up your prayer :) I encourage y’all to check out their sweet work!

You can change the climate but you can’t stop the spring! (Or can you? Too deep..) SO happy to see this garden we put in THIS PAST FALL looking like it’s been here forever. 99% California native plants soaking up the blazing sun like it’s scrumptious. YUM

First half of the cobbled hillside orchard is in. When a huge live oak fell here 2 years ago, it opened a huge patch of south-facing sunny slope in the canyon. The ravelly slopes here need roots to stabilize them, so an orchard felt like the perfect fit. We overwintered the hillside with burlap netting and a cover crop mix of nitrogen fixers and native medicinals, which we just cut in preparation to plant. This slope was mean! Well over 45 degrees in the upper sections. So far we have olives (at the top where the can get blasted), oranges, lime, peach, pear, and guava, with an understory of native sages. Many more exotics fruit trees are on the way because believe it or not but this is just half of the open space! Next is to form a few natural pathways to snake alone the slope off of the incredible staircase made of all on-site rock by the inimitable Adrian Lopez.

Shots of the early spring garden at a beauty project property in Brentwood. With gardens running up into the oak canyon, playing at the edge of wild and tended has been a joy. The bounty of herbals and edibles we have scattered throughout the landscape pulls me closer to the mysteries of place; each plant adds to this little ecosystem. And I now think artichokes should be in every landscape design.

Well happy new year. As we feel the days just starting to turn toward new length, and in SoCal the spring begins to show its tips in the hillsides and dormant elderberries, I am carried back into the beauty of soil. Winter is a time of rest and compost, of preparing fertility for the coming spring snd summer. And so it has felt very fitting to wrap up this beauty. A very handsome compost system and pad out together in collaboration with the equally handsome , with some serious hours clocked by the lovely . Western red cedar with all the fixings, I’m very excited to open the new year rotting all things that no longer serve us in such a temple. Soil Ho!

1060 gallons on deck. They say it’s an La Niña year so we’re going to make the most of it. With the size of the roof catchment these tanks will fill up in one solid rain event. Even with our sporadic rain they’ll bring a steady supply of irrigation to the garden through mid summer. Soak it!

Another lovey little backyard :) this one is half CA natives and half Mediterranean climate beauties from Mexico and beyond. steel-edged amoeba DG patio matches the wacky natural terracing that was here. Too many little touches to show here, but was especially happy to plant a row of Island Snapdragon. A fun design collaboration with . Excited for this one to receive the rains and grow.
