One of the questions I get asked most during my workshops is: what should I plant in my garden so I always have something to cut for arrangements?
It’s one of my favorite questions and the answer is simpler than you might think. The goal is a layered garden that gives you something beautiful to cut in every single season.
Start with your main flower.
This is your statement bloom — the one that anchors the arrangement. Think zinnias, dahlias, roses, or hydrangeas. Hydrangeas are actually stunning all on their own and need nothing else. Roses feel common until you discover the varieties available through or — then they become something else entirely. Layered, romantic, breathtaking.
Then think in layers underground.
Early spring — tulips, ranunculus, and iris push up first. Summer — zinnias, cosmos, and dahlias take over
Fall — late dahlias, sunflowers, and cone hydrangea carry you through
Winter — keep it simple and cut what the garden gives you
For greens:
You don’t need to plant them. Look at what’s already growing around you — trees, shrubs, bushes. Most offer something worth cutting and often the most unexpected branches make the most beautiful additions to an arrangement.
And for those one or two special stems:
Most arrangement benefits from something a little unique and whimsical that you may not grow yourself. If you’re in the Newport or Laguna Beach area that’s what is for. Everywhere else — almost always has something worth picking up.
Plant in layers. Cut often. Your home will never be without flowers. 🌸
