Sunny Hill Gardens

Sunny Hill Gardens A lifelong gardener, plant collector & daylily hybridizer interested in sharing my love of plants.

I'm a lifelong gardener who started hybridizing Siberian iris in the late 1990's after joining the Maine Siberian Iris Society and receiving guidance from hybridizer John White of Auburn, Maine. I also had the opportunity to visit the gardens of Currier McEwen, a well-known hybridizer of Siberian and Japanese Iris, in Harpswell Maine and drew inspiration from his beautiful creations. Ted White, wh

o was president of the Iris Society at the time, showed me his daylily hybridizing beds and before I knew it, I was snatching up daylilies at the Iris Society plant sales and everywhere else I could find them. Yes, it became a "hobby gone wild" but one that I will always find so exciting and fulfilling. The thrill of going out to the gardens each morning to see what new has bloomed is hard to match! In recent years I began selling field-dug and potted perennials to support my hobby as I try to add recent daylily introductions to my collection each year. I haven't yet registered any of my seedlings but hope to do so as my recent retirement will let me properly evaluate their garden merits. I have not zeroed in on specific hybridizing goals other than hardy plants in my Zone 4b (microclimate) to Zone 5 gardens, with adequate branching and bud count and a beautiful bloom that speaks to me or improves upon various forms or traits. Since my gardens are too large to maintain without help, I have found people interested in weeding, digging and whatever in exchange for plants. I thoroughly enjoy making new gardening friends this way and sharing "plant therapy". I hold an Open Garden Day each year during daylily peak bloom season for the public to stroll through my gardens, take pictures, enjoy refreshments and garden talk, and if desired, purchase plants at lower than typical retail prices. I also give tours of my gardens by individual appointment as I love to share the beauty of plants. Feel free to message me to arrange a visit or ask any questions.

My new daylily purchases just arrived bare root and I potted them up until I figure out the best garden spots for them. Can't wait to see them bloom. If I'm lucky, a few of them will send up a scape or two this summer and I'll be able to use the pollen. This is what they'll look like when they do.

One of my favorite winter pastimes is scrolling through my hundreds of daylily photos from the past summer, daydreaming about seeing them bloom again and planning some hybridizing crosses. That, and sorting through my far too many bags of hybridized seeds to prioritize ones to plant. Thought you might enjoy seeing some of these.

Siberian Iris season is here and I have lots of registered and unregistered varieties in many colors for sale. These are not your grandmother’s old-fashioned purple variety. Pricing is $8 for 4 fans of registered varieties and premium unregistered; $5 for at least 6 fans of other unregistered plants.

These will be field dug to order on location, bare root and wrapped in wet newspaper to maintain moisture to roots until planted. If it is busy and you cannot wait for me to dig on the sale date, you can dig your own (with guidance) or schedule a time to come back when I can give you my sole attention. Bonus plants of my choosing will be available.

Sunday 6/15, 10: 00 am – 5:00 pm and Monday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm. Other times by appointment.
24 Plateau Ridge Rd, Loudon NH 03307

Due to the number of varieties for sale, I cannot respond to requests to send pictures with pricing or hold plants in advance but have given a sampling here.
