Now’s a good time to work on getting your lawn in shape for next year. I.e. Aeration/over-seeding.

With the cooler weather it’s also a decent time to spray the w**ds. Caveat, be sure to read the label first!

Some herbicides require time between treatment and aeration/over-seeding. E.g. Quinclorac - seven days, whereas Speedzone is around twenty-one days. Also depends on plugging vs just broadcasting seed.

Some data collected on number of mowing(s) per year, over the past five years. Combination of irrigated and non-irrigated lawns. With the dry heat we had last season, even watered lawns required less service.

2012 - 32 Mowing(s)
2013 - 33.75
2014 - 30.5
2015 - 27.3
2016 - 25

I've been in the lawn and landscape industry for going on twenty eight years now. On average there seems to be a seven year tend in the cycle of weather.

However, the weather pattern does appear to be more unstable. Compared to what it was back in the “80’s

Most of your general herbicides like, Drive 75 or Speedzone, don’t control Nutsedge. Here’s a selective herbicide just for Nutsedge called Sedgehammer. You can get it in small one gallon mix packets. Tip: Be sure to agitate/shake your spray tank often to keep the solution mixed for best results.

Nutsedge tends to grow in clusters once one plant w**d gets established.

Once again lawn diseases are an issue. Brown Patch seems to be prevalent in our region currently. Combination of heat and humidity create an environment that is conducive for fungus to grow and eventually kill the turf.

Fungicide treatments are not cheap and usually require more than one application. Timing is the other factor. If you can treat your lawn before conditions are favorable for diseases to develop you’ll be ahead of the game. However it’s difficult to predict when to apply treatment.

Once a turf disease is active best you can do is manage the damage so it doesn’t get worse. Then come fall over seed.

A product I endorse is Heritage. It’s at the top end of cost. However, with consideration of disease(s) it controls along with it’s residual, you get more bang for your buck with this product.

Usually February is a good time to cut back your monkey grass. This season, with all the cold we've had, you can still cut back your grass in March. On this steep terrain I’ll be utilizing a trimmer cutting wheel attachment.

Compared to where we were last year. We’re a good two weeks late this season.

Will estimate a good time to put down your first application of pre-emergent around early-mid March.

Don’t forget to water your houseplants! They can dry out in just a couple days when your furnace is running to offset the cold.

Good time to check/replace your furnace filter(s) before the single digits get here!

New grass is usually robust enough to handle a good freeze after a couple mowings. Otherwise, as long as the temperature doesn’t fluctuate more the 50° within a twenty-four period your new grass should be fine. (Falcon V fescue pictured after first cut)

By now most should have their winter blend turf fertilizer down. If not, there’s still time. The basic rule of thumb is to allow six to eight weeks between applications. This is considered one of the most important applications.
