Rainy day rain garden check!! Turns out the soil in this area had more clay than anticipated so I spent a few hours moving the top layer of mulch and mixing in compost to help soak up water and I started installing the weirs for overflow because wow was it wet!!!

🌧️ Rain Garden Update! 🌧️ After a hot day of digging, the back two rain gardens have been installed along with a berm of shrubs along the deck to keep water out of the house. The last rain garden in this area will be installed soon! Stay tuned!

I’m in a magazine!! What an honor to be able to contribute to this amazing project from LaToya Drake and Need More Acres Farm ! These magazines went out for free to 300 households in Central Kentucky as a part of a Food as Medicine initiative. Each magazine was included in one of the many boxes of fresh locally grown produce from Need More Acres Farm and included recipes from the amazing LaToya LaToya Drake . I’m told there’s more to come, so check out www.howtoeatgood.com for more resources!

Education is at the root of my business. My goal is to not only grow gardens but to teach you how to take care of your plants. Rooted Solutions is proud to be the contracted environmental educator for the Jefferson County Soil & Water Conservation District Jefferson Co. Soil & Water Conservation District . This weekend I’ll be teaching a composting workshop at the West End Farmers’ Market hosted by Change Today, Change Tomorrow . Rain gardens are great solutions for wet areas. I’m so excited to help this homeowner turn their “swamp” into a beautiful rain garden over the next few weeks. More photos to come, stay tuned…

TROUBLE WITH SQUIRRELS 🐿️ ? Try harvesting your tomatoes when they are about 50% ripe then let them finish ripening in a sunny window. You will still get a vine-ripened taste without squirrel bite marks.

Apparently weeds still grow when the heat index is over 100 F. Go check on your plant friends, they are not okay….

I found 5 different species of insect in one milkweed planting this morning! This is why native plants are important—they protect biodiversity just by being themselves! Insects pictured: monarch butterfly caterpillar (pollinator); lacewing insect eggs (lacewings eat aphids & other pest insects); ladybug (also eats aphids); Assassin bug (big time pest predator); milkweed beetle (pollinator).
