Back out to the woodland garden today. We w**ded, cut back a bit and added a few new plants to provide summer blooms to primarily spring bloomers.🌸 Then we finished with a fresh layer of mulch.

This garden bed was overrun with grass. We dug out the grass, edged the beds and trimmed all the hedges for a clean look. This client is ready for the season!

One of the biggest reasons some landscapes look fresh and vibrant all summer long is because of the work that happens before summer officially arrives.

Right now, we're helping homeowners prepare their garden beds by cleaning out leaves that collected around hydrangeas and other perennial plants over the fall and winter. We're also removing w**ds that have emerged during the spring season before they have a chance to spread and compete with your plants for nutrients and moisture. While it may seem like simple cleanup work, these tasks play an important role in the overall health and appearance of your landscape.

A clean garden bed allows plants to breathe, receive proper sunlight, and put their energy into healthy growth rather than fighting through debris and w**ds. It also gives your landscape that neat, polished appearance that makes such a difference when you're spending time outdoors during the summer months. Sometimes the best gardens aren't created with more plants—they're created with proper maintenance and attention to detail.

Now is the perfect time to get your landscape cleaned up, refreshed, and ready for a beautiful summer season.

Most people think mulch is simply there to make garden beds look neat and finished. While it certainly improves the appearance of your landscape, mulch is actually doing much more behind the scenes.

One of the biggest benefits of mulch is its ability to help the soil retain moisture during hot summer weather. By creating a protective layer over the soil, mulch slows evaporation, helping plant roots stay cooler and hydrated for longer periods between waterings. This can be especially important during Michigan's hottest summer weeks when plants are working hard to stay healthy and established. Mulch also helps reduce w**d growth, regulate soil temperatures, and improve the overall health of your landscape.

Whether you're planting new flowers, refreshing existing beds, or planning a complete landscape makeover, proper mulching is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support healthy plants throughout the growing season. Sometimes the most important work in the garden is happening below the surface.

Edging for your landscaping, what should you do to keep the grass from growing into your beds? While they are cute and easy to install, resist edging that sits on top of the lawn. Turf grass roots go 4 inches deep and will grow right into your beds. Instead buy black diamond or metal edging that is sunk into the ground to block the roots.
Another option is the natural edge. A trench or trough is dig to prevent the grass from growing into the bed. However, this method does need to be maintained throughout the season with a w**d whipper.

I met Jim and Anne last season to discuss their vision for replacing all the hostas and plants that were not bringing joy and creativity to their beautiful home and landscaping. Last year we tore it out and let the beds rest in anticipation for this year’s diversity of textures, shapes and colors! We planted a combination of astilbe, coral bells, Japanese painted ferns, Japanese forest grass and lung wart, little lime punch hydrangeas, agastache, dianthus, yellow cone flowers and Ligularia. It’s going to be a sight to behold!! 🌼

One of the most important things you can do after installing new plants is make sure they receive adequate water while they become established. Those first few weeks are critical because the plant is working hard to develop a healthy root system and adapt to its new environment.

That's where proper planting techniques and mulch make a huge difference. When we install new plants, we use quality soil and finish the area with a layer of mulch, typically 2 to 3 inches deep. The mulch helps retain moisture around the root zone, reduces evaporation, regulates soil temperature, and helps new plants establish themselves more successfully. While it's possible to overwater almost any plant, many of the drought-tolerant varieties we select become much more self-sufficient once they're established and rooted in.

A healthy landscape starts below the surface. With the right plant selection, proper installation, thoughtful watering, and quality mulch, your garden can thrive for years to come while requiring less maintenance over time.

One of the most common questions I get from homeowners is, "How much mulch do I need?" The good news is that figuring it out is easier than you might think.

Start by measuring the length and width of your landscape beds to determine the square footage. You don't even need a tape measure, just use your feet. Once you have the square footage of each bed, add those numbers together and use one of the many free online mulch calculators available. Simply enter your square footage, choose your desired mulch depth, and the calculator will tell you how many cubic yards you'll need. Just remember to account for shrubs, flowers, and other plant material that take up space in the bed, since those areas won't need mulch.

One helpful tip for homeowners buying bagged mulch: it takes approximately 13 bags of 2-cubic-foot mulch to equal one cubic yard. In most cases, bulk mulch is more cost-effective, offers better quality, and is much easier to work with for larger projects. A little planning upfront can save you time, money, and multiple trips back to the garden center.
