Do you follow the phases of the moon? 🌑

If you are a busy mom, you probably don’t.

You appreciate the moon’s beauty and enjoy looking at it when you have the chance…

But we’ve all got so much going on in our hectic lives already that we don’t really need to direct our energy to pay attention to the moon cycles, right?

As unlikely as it seems, tuning into and connecting with the rhythms of the moon has been one of the most important decisions I’ve ever made as a mom.

The moon serves as a wise, gentle, and ever-present guide in my hectic life.

The moon and her rhythm is something I can hold onto even when things get chaotic.

She orients me to where I am right now.

She encourages me to slow down and enjoy the here and now, because things will inevitably change.

And she gives me permission to accept and experience the full range of my emotions-- the ups and the downs.

Just like tuning into the seasons helps me stay grounded throughout the year, tuning into the phases of the moon each month helps me stay present and focused during my days.

The new moon is the first day of the lunar cycle.

A new beginning.
A fresh start.
A blank slate.

The new moon serves as a reminder and an opportunity to slow down and claim a new beginning for ourselves.

On today’s New Moon, I invite you to get inspired by the moon's energy and sneak in a bit of self-care for your soul.

Today or tomorrow, intentionally take some time (even 10 minutes will do) to reflect on the moon and what her new moon wisdom may uncover for you.

Suggested questions you can ponder:
🌑 Who or what do you need to release right now?
🌑 What refresh or restart do you need in your life?
🌑 What new beginning would you like to pursue?

You can do this practice sitting in a quiet room- just make sure to let your family know you don’t want to be disturbed.

Or you may enjoy doing this on a solo walk outdoors or while taking a bath.

However you do it, just claim a few minutes for yourself to get away by yourself and reflect.

You deserve it.

I recently wrote a guest post for all about how to grow garlic at home

Here are my favorite tips:
🧄 Every garlic clove has the ability to grow into an entire bulb when planted
🧄 The easiest way to find a garlic that will grow well in your area is to buy garlic from a local farmer
🧄 Plant your garlic IN THE FALL around Halloween to harvest it next summer

Lots of delicious things come out of my garden, but not all can be seen in a bowl…

🌱 Moments of feeling grounded, present and peaceful

🌱 Precious memories with my son digging in the dirt and eating fruit off the vine

🌱 Empowerment over tackling new projects and overcoming struggles

🌱 Deep connection and appreciation of nature and our planet

Tell me— what amazing things do you GROW that can’t be seen on your plate?

Sometimes things just don’t go to plan…

Even if you prepare for months. Even if you try your best. Even if you are super smart and talented…

Life tends to happen.

You get too busy. Or bad luck strikes. Or you mess up.

It’s kind of like this broccoli...

I missed my window to harvest this broccoli head 🥦

Broccoli heads are actually the flowers of the plant-- and if you don’t harvest the head soon enough, it flowers.

And it just doesn't taste quite the same after that.

So a bummer? Yeah kinda.

But look at how pretty it is 😍

Always doing the right thing at the right time sounds great and all...

But being "perfect" may mean that you miss out on some beautiful things.

So… try your best. Have a plan. And then be ready to roll with it and find the beauty. ✨

As a new gardener, I was totally lost in uncertainty and confusion. 😫

I had SO MANY QUESTIONS so I went looking for answers:

✅ Google
✅ Blogs
✅ YouTube
✅ Facebook Groups
✅ Books
✅ Extension Services

And I found LOTS of information. Too much actually.

I spent hours of time I couldn’t really afford to give reading through it.

Problem is, very little of what I found felt like it actually helped me.

Little of the information seemed to fit MY situation.

I would get 10 completely different answers for every question I asked.

I usually ended up feeling even more confused than when I started.

And I was investing tons of my time without seeing the results I wanted.

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I didn’t know who to trust.
And I was SO frustrated.

I just wanted help.
I just wanted someone to show me what to do.
I just wanted to enjoy my garden.

I can see now that a lot of the gardening advice given online is outdated, unsuitable, or flat out wrong.

Or it’s incomplete and describes the WHAT but not the HOW and sends you on even more wild goose chases to find more information. Just what we all need…

It’s truly a perfect recipe for overwhelm and failure.

WHY is this how we expect new gardeners to learn?

Who has time for this?
Who has patience for this?
Who is enjoying themselves this way?

No one.

I am committed to serving new gardeners better. I started my garden coaching program to offer new gardeners a better way to learn that requires less time and less stress.

Tell me about your experiences- have you found free or low cost gardening advice to be helpful? How do you learn best?

It is time to make a decision...

I hear from a lot of gardeners that they agonize over thinning their plants.
That deciding to pull one or the other feels wrong.
That both deserve to live.
That both have the potential to become beautiful plants.
That not growing both is wasteful.

It is so easy to struggle to make decisions in our modern world where we all have countless decisions to make everyday and so many options available to us.

The good news?
With most decisions, there actually is no wrong choice.

There is just a decision to be made.
Option A or Option B.
Yes or no.
Left or right.
Just pick one.

The only TRUE wrong choice with most decisions in life is spinning out and getting stuck in indecision.

🥒 NOT making a choice prevents you from moving forward.
🥒 NOT making a choice keeps you feeling overwhelmed and unclear.
🥒 NOT making a choice may mean you miss out on both options.
🥒 And with seedlings, NOT making a choice forces both plants to compete for limited water, nutrients, and sunlight, and stunts both of their growth. Talk about waste...

Just pick one.
Slow down.
Consider.
Pay attention.
Listen to your gut.
You know what to do.
Now go do it.

PS, I picked the left one 💚

The key to being a good gardener (and a good mom) does mean never making a mistake. It means recognizing when you have made a mistake and doing what needs to be done to correct it.

I messed up this week and totally let my remaining seedlings get dried out. Luckily I know what needs to be done now- soaking them in water and giving them an extra dose of liquid kelp and seaweed.

Plants (like kids) are resilient and will survive most of your mistakes 💚

Cold alert!! 🥶 Are you covering your warm season crops??

Somehow we are back here again- temps have been in the forties the last few nights and may dip into the thirties tonight! I planted out my tomatoes, peppers, and basil... and low and behold, now it’s too cold for them. Even if it doesn’t frost, they really hate temps below 50 and it’s a good idea to do what you can to keep them warm.

Oh well, that’s just Wisconsin gardening. That is why I own heavy row cover and hoops. These are one of those things that every gardener should keep handy for unexpected bad weather. This should get my plant babies through this (last 🤞) cold snap.

Do you take the time to introduce your plants gradually to the great outdoors??

One of the worst things you can do to your little seedlings is to abruptly move them from indoors to outdoors without providing them a chance to adjust- that is STRESSFUL for a baby plant!

You can help your plants adjust successfully via a weeklong “hardening off” process- kind of like preschool for plants where they get to dip their toes into what it feels like to be outside and make biological adjustments to thrive outdoors.

Today is Day 1️⃣ of gardening off my summer seedlings, in preparation for moving them outdoors next week. It’s a mild overcast day today with light rain- gentle and supportive weather for plants just getting used to the great outdoors 🌧

Want more info on how to give your baby seedlings a great start outside? Check out my recent guest blog post with !
