Mold remediation doesn’t have to be destructive.

One of the biggest misconceptions we see is that mold remediation requires aggressive blasting, heavy sanding, or removing large amounts of wood. In many cases, that simply isn’t true.

The EPA recommends removing mold growth and addressing the moisture source that allowed it to develop in the first place. When performed correctly, remediation should focus on cleaning affected surfaces, containing the work area when necessary, and correcting the conditions that caused the growth.

This photo shows a before and after remediation. The goal wasn’t to remove wood, it was to remove the fungal growth while preserving the structural integrity of the material.

Unfortunately, many companies use overly aggressive methods that can unnecessarily damage wood fibers, reduce the lifespan of structural members, or create additional repair costs for homeowners. Every situation is different, but the least invasive method that effectively removes the contamination is often the best approach.

We’ve had some pretty heavy storms roll through recently, and this is exactly why it’s important to make sure your crawlspace is waterproofed the right way.

This video here are from a crawlspace that was recently encapsulated by another company, but after the rain you can clearly see water running across the liner, staining, and collecting along the wall. When a crawlspace is done correctly, you shouldn’t see this happening.

Encapsulation alone doesn’t stop water. If the drainage system isn’t installed properly first, the water will still find its way through and end up on top of the liner or along the walls, just like you see in these photos.

In the crawlspace we recently inspected, there was a “drain system” installed, but the pipe was literally just sitting on top of the dirt with water not going anywhere. Water has to have somewhere to go or the system simply won’t work.

A proper crawlspace waterproofing system needs to actually control the water before everything is sealed up. Otherwise issues like this show up the first time you get a good stretch of rain.

We see situations like this more often than we should, and unfortunately homeowners end up having to get things corrected later.
