Packing for Indonesia? Pack these first. 📚🌴

We asked around the studio and here's what's on our shelf before any trip back home:

✈️ Indonesia, Etc. — Elizabeth Pisani
✈️ A House in Bali — Colin McPhee
✈️ The Malay Archipelago — Alfred Russel Wallace
✈️ Eat, Pray, Love — Elizabeth Gilbert
✈️ The Rainbow Troops (Laskar Pelangi) — Andrea Hirata

One written by an Indonesian author, one from a naturalist who mapped the whole archipelago, one that made half of us want to move to Bali — all worth the read before you land.

📖 Save this for your next trip 💛

Happy Labor Day — a tribute to the hands behind every piece

09/06/2026

We didn’t expect a bandana made by hand in small batches in Java to end up in Nordstrom. But here we are - 300+ stores across US, UK, France, Netherlands, Canada, Japan and more, and still every single piece is wax-stamped by hand with a copper plate and canting tool, the same way it’s been done for 700 years. 🧵 Batik vs. Ikat — do you know the difference?

Two of Indonesia’s most iconic textile arts, but totally different processes:

🌟 Batik — hot wax is hand-drawn onto woven cloth, then dyed. The wax resists the color, creating crisp, intricate patterns. Look for the subtle “cracking” — that’s the mark of authentic handwork.

🌟 Ikat — the yarn is tied and dyed before it’s ever woven. That’s why Ikat has that signature blurry, feathered edge, and the pattern looks the same on both sides.

Same island artistry, two totally different journeys from thread to cloth. 🇮🇩
