Este was built on a highly challenging site—located on one of the most easterly private residential blocks in Australia, in Byron Bay’s Wategos Beach caldera—into a carefully crafted architectural work of lasting value.
Designed as two independent homes, the residences balance privacy with connection. Each home functions separately, while linking at the rooftop level, where shared pools, courtyards framed by subtropical rainforest, and entertaining spaces capture sweeping ocean views and sunsets.
The design uses a restrained, timeless palette of natural stone, spotted gum timber, and board-formed concrete, intended to weather and blend into the surrounding landscape over time. Though compact in scale, the interiors feel bespoke and gallery-like, featuring curated art and refined detailing.
Playful architectural moments—such as glass floors, internal lightwells, and rooftop pools that double as ceilings to outdoor spaces—add unexpected drama and lightness.
Este stands as a significant achievement shaped by long approvals, strong collaboration, and a shared vision between client, builder, and architect.
