MAMMATUS CLOUDS

We got a bunch of photos of these clouds this evening. Thanks for all of these, I'm having fun going through them all!

They form when colder air sinks toward the bottom of the cloud, forming what looks like pouches, bulges or bubbles. They often form in the anvil of cumulonimbus clouds, but not always.

While the don't necessarily mean that severe weather is occurring, they are often seen before or after strong storms. They are more of a sign that the atmosphere is unstable or turbulent, conditions that are found during severe weather.
