Who doesn’t love Uncle Sam?

Did you know that Uncle Sam became America’s symbol during the War of 1812?

It was said that the nickname came from Samuel Wilson, a meat packer whose barrels were stamped “U. S.” and soldiers jokingly said that it stood for Uncle Sam.

In 2026 a whimsical Uncle Sam is not just a part of history and nostalgia, but a cheerful way to welcome guests and celebrate the Semiquincentennial in your warm, inviting home.

Here’s some interesting information about our current flag of the United States of America:

Our flag with red and white stripes, and fifty stars representing our fifty states, was designed by Robert G. Heft in 1958 when he was just a seventeen year old high school student.

He created the design as part of a history school project after Alaska and Hawaii were accepted into the union.

He originally received a B- on the project( I think you will agree with me that teacher was one hard grader) but his teacher promised to raise his grade if his design was accepted on a national level.

In 1960 President Dwight D. Eisenhower selected Heft’s design as the new American flag and we’ve been saluting it for 66 years.

Who says that teenagers can’t make a difference? Heft did.

How will you display the American flag in your home this year in which we celebrate our sesquicentennial?

I plan to place them everywhere to show my patriotism and pride, as in this floral display on my table.

Now that summer has unofficially started, isn’t it time for a picnic?

Just the thought of it is warm and inviting to me.

I can’t believe Memorial Day weekend starts on Friday-time really does fly.

Do you love to cut flowers from your garden and place them in a vase in your home?

I think fresh flowers always makes a home more warm and inviting.

These are peonies from my peony shrub. They bloomed just this week. I just love the vibrant color.

I bought a small sewing machine this year and made a simple patriotic table runner using a few squares and some ricrac.

I paired it with some white candles, Valerie Parr Hill crystal candlestick holders, candle rings and an Uncle Sam nutcracker I purchased at Home Goods.
