Summer means outdoor projects take center stage. I love working on decks because it’s an opportunity to be outside and soak up the sun. This deck was in terrible shape, but wasn’t yet a total tear down. Let me walk you through the process I used to revive and extend the life of this deck. Previously the homeowner was slapping a coat of paint on this deck yearly, only to have it looking rougher for the wear every spring. The key to getting at least 3-5 years of chip free wear is all in the PREP + PRODUCTS! This deck was power-washed and all rotted boards were replaced. After everything dried out, I scraped and sanded all loose paint flakes off until the remaining paint was mostly stable. 😅NOW HERE’S THE SECRET… the most important step- PrimeRX peel bonding primer. This coat is more of a glue than a paint. It seals down the surface to help level and bond the new coat with previous coats and the deck surface. It goes on milky and dries clear. I SWEAR BY THIS STUFF! I’ve used it on a previous wood siding job that 8 years later is still looking as good as the day I painted it! 24hrs after a heavy coat of PrimeRX, I finished the surface with two coats of Sherwin Williams Deck and Dock coating in ultra white. This heavy bodied coating helps level the surface and bridge any gaps in the worn wood. It’s hard to tell from the pics, but the result is a deck that is smooth, sound, protected and beautiful! 😍 Michele Dupras - Artisan Design Works
