Plaster ceiling repair in Kirkwood, MO.

What started as an upstairs bathroom leak turned into a water-damaged kitchen ceiling on the main floor. The homeowner made an honest attempt to repair it themselves, but after living with the results for a few months, they called us to get it done right before a family gathering next weekend.

We evaluated the ceiling, provided a fair estimate, and completed the repair in just one day.

Our process:
• Scraped all failing paint and plaster
• Sealed the surface with oil primer
• Applied 3 coats of drywall mud
• Primed the repaired area
• Painted the entire ceiling corner to corner for a seamless finish

It’s been a minute since we’ve posted a solid before and after.

This customer called us after an upstairs bathroom leak caused water damage in their kitchen ceiling.

The tough part? They had already paid someone else to “fix” it… before the actual water issue was properly addressed.

So not only did they have to deal with the damage again, they had to pay for it twice.

Scope of work:

• Removed all failing drywall tape from the previous repair
• Scraped off excessive, built-up mud
• Retaped the ceiling properly
• Floated nearly the entire ceiling and skimmed it smooth
• Sanded everything down
• Sealed all water stains
• Repainted the ceiling

There are three options when hiring a contractor: cheap, good, and fast.

You can pick two. You can’t have all three.

If you’re dealing with interior water damage, get an honest, experienced opinion before moving forward. It can save you a lot of time, money, and frustration in the long run.

Here’s something most homeowners OR self-proclaimed professionals don’t realize

Mesh tape is NOT the right way to repair drywall.

Yeah… it looks great at first. Smooth, clean, done fast.
But give it a little time—and those cracks come right back.

Why?

Mesh tape doesn’t have the strength to hold a seam together on its own. It relies heavily on the compound, and as your house naturally shifts (which it always does), that repair can’t handle the movement.

That’s when you start seeing:
• Hairline cracks
• Seam lines reappearing
• Repairs that look worse than before

Paper tape, when installed correctly, actually bonds into the mud and creates a much stronger, longer-lasting repair.

So if you’ve had a “repair” fail before… chances are mesh tape was used.

Quick fixes are cheap—but doing it right saves you from doing it twice.

If you want repairs that actually last, there’s a right way to do it 👍
