16 birds singing in the yard while I'm sitting on the bench under the tree. Many of them I've never noticed before. My daughter loves using this app with me. The Merlin app is worth getting to learn more about the birds in your yard.

Just hatched guinea fowl for the first time, and I can't express enough how active they are.
I treated them like the chicken chicks I've hatched before. Usually, I can put chicks under a broody hen and they'll stay close by her for protection.
These guinea keets had other plans. They were running all over the place, and I simply couldn't keep up with them. I ended up moving the broody hens and keets into a holding pen to keep them contained.
I've already lost one.
If you're thinking about hatching guinea fowl, be prepared for the chaos. They are a completely different experience than chickens.

I'm working on my gate and the peafowl came by to see what I'm doing. They are always acting like that nosy neighbor watching everything you're doing, but they aren't hiding behind the blinds.

Have you thought about getting your own bees?

If so, don't just buy a hive and figure it out as you go. Trust me, that approach usually gets expensive, frustrating, and doesn't end well for either you or the bees. Ask me how I know.

If you're new to beekeeping or only know the basics, I highly recommend checking out the upcoming bee class hosted by Safe Harbor Farm in Maysville. A little education up front can save you a lot of money, mistakes, and headaches down the road.

The classes will be held on Saturdays from July 18 through August 22.

Today’s one of those days that makes you question whether it’s worth it sometimes. People talk about the cute moments of having animals, but nobody really talks about the mess that comes with it, and even less about the heartache.
Goose Goose didn’t get much time on this earth. African geese can live 10 to 15 years, sometimes even longer. Somehow, in the short time he was here, he still managed to leave a mark on us. He was full of personality. He’d run under my legs for protection and always wanted to be wherever we were.
Nicole didn’t even want him at first, and even she got attached to him.
I found him lifeless beside the house this morning, and I still don’t know what happened. I really was looking forward to watching him grow up and become part of protecting the farm.

I couldn't get the other side where she's missing half her wing, but her feathers are starting to grow back and she's getting around great. She can still fly as well. Nicole named her Wanda the Wonderer. Hopefully she doesn't try to leave the yard next time she's broody. She actually let's me get close to her now, after the attack. Still hisses if I try to touch her. She's been like that since we got her.
