Funny how the thing that changes your career can be something you never planned for.

Aeroview’s aviation niche started because I designed my own studio inside a hangar.

That was it.

I wasn’t trying to “find a niche.” I created a space I loved, people responded to it, and I started paying attention.

Sometimes I think we put so much pressure on ourselves to have the entire plan figured out that we miss what’s unfolding right in front of us.

Follow the thing that lights you up. Notice what people keep asking you for. Be willing to go somewhere you didn’t originally plan.

You might accidentally build a career you couldn’t have dreamed up if you tried. ✈️

It seems pretty fitting that I’m sharing this on National Aviation Day. ✈️

Aviation has shaped an entire lifestyle and designing the spaces where that lifestyle happens on the ground is exactly why I created Aeroview.

This private aircraft hangar project includes approximately 2,800 square feet of finished interior space across two levels, and there is a lot more happening in this floorplan than simply finding places for rooms.

We’re thinking about how the owner uses the hangar, where people naturally gather, how the finished spaces relate to the aircraft, sightlines, circulation, storage, and what happens once the engine shuts down.

I’ve already shared a closer look at the pilot lounge, but there are so many individual decisions within this floorplan that I’m turning it into a series.

I’ll be breaking down different areas of the hangar and sharing why I designed them the way I did.

Because a private hangar shouldn’t just be designed around where the airplane fits.
It should be designed around the life you live because of it.

If I asked you what you wanted in your dream hangar, what would you say?

Pilot lounge? Kitchen? Bar? Office? Golf simulator? Huge TV? ✈️

Those are the fun answers, but they're not where I would start designing your hangar.

I'd start with you.

How do you fly? What happens at the hangar when you're not flying? Who comes with you? Do you entertain there? Work there? Spend Saturdays watching airplanes with the hangar door open? Where does your flight gear go? And what do you want to see when you're sitting in your lounge?

Two pilots can own the exact same aircraft and need completely different hangars.

That's why a private hangar floor plan shouldn't begin with a checklist of cool rooms. It should begin with understanding the aviation lifestyle happening inside it.

A hangar home isn’t just a house with a really big garage attached. ✈️

And designing one requires thinking about a lot more than whether your airplane fits through the hangar door.

How will you move from the aircraft into your home after a flight? Where will the flight bags, headsets, luggage, tools, and gear actually go? Can you see your airplane from the spaces where you spend the most time? What happens if you upgrade aircraft five or ten years from now?

These are the kinds of decisions that can completely change how an aviation property functions and they’re much easier to make before construction begins.

Designing for the aviation lifestyle looks a little different every day.

One day I’m working on plans for a custom hangar home. The next I’m walking an airpark property, sourcing furnishings for an aviation residence, designing a private hangar or pilot lounge or flying into an FBO and thinking about how the space could better serve the pilots and passengers walking through it.

Because aviation spaces shouldn’t just look good.

They should understand the people who use them.

How pilots live.
How they entertain.
How they work.
How they travel.
And, of course, where the airplane fits into all of it. 😉

"Our floor plan is finished. We just need help picking selections."

I've heard this several times recently, especially from homeowners planning custom homes.

The truth is, a finished floor plan doesn't always mean the design is finished.

Today, this is just a field with pecan trees.

But on the plans I'm holding, it's already home.

One of the most rewarding parts of designing an aviation residence is standing on the property and seeing what doesn't exist yet. The morning coffee on the porch. The walk from the house to the hangar. The guests arriving for a weekend fly-in. The airplane waiting just steps from the back door.

That's what a preliminary planning package is really about.

Before construction begins. Before permits. Before materials are selected.

It's about making sure every building on the property works together, every view has purpose, and every square foot supports the lifestyle you're building.

This project includes a custom residence, a private hangar, and a guest cottage all thoughtfully planned to fit the family's vision and the property itself.

Watching that vision come to life on the very land where it will soon be built is something I'll never get tired of.

Start with a plan that works for the way you live.
