With the first signs of spring, it is time to start cutting back some of the old growth from last year’s garden. We carefully mulch the whole landscape, being especially careful with cool season grasses and other plants that are starting their active growing season.

Winter Flowers
In the blue cup of morning when I am walking
in the cold, the edifice of winter flowers
stands lovely without bloom—not Paschal,

but not death exactly, not a scrap heap.
A marvel of design, of made things—seed

heads of burdock, mullein, coneflower,

papery miracle of the wasp nest unanchored.

Even at its strictest and darkest the land

shows forth signs and we go out

in search of them, expecting them.

Every year, we select a book to feature at our Create Beauty Conference that directly corresponds to the conversations of the day. Often written by one of our speakers, these texts allow us to dive deeper into the subject matter and serve as a reference for sustainable landscape practices.

Make sure you don’t miss this event featuring and for a day of inspiration and education!
