Hey, hey, hey! It's that time of year... time to bring your houseplants inside for winter! Here's my before and after. I bring mine in side when the temps drop to 40-50掳 Fahrenheit. I probably could've waited a few more days. But I wanted to do it when I had the time. Normally, I would give them all a shower with my house to knock of any extra buggies. But, I live in an apartment now, so not really an option. However, I did put one or two in my shower inside! I plan to get a couple of shower curtains from Dollar Tree for the floor and to line my vintage wood crib. A towel will suffice for now. In the next few days, I will go thru and clean all the dusty leaves. I will cut broken leaves or dead material. I will apply Bonide systemic insect granules to the soil of each plant. I have 2 grow lights with 5 wands each. However, I plant to get one more similar light, as I have so many plants. I have terrible lighting inside and only west facing windows. Regular lights won't work! You need grow lights! Also, I have two humidifiers that I plan to run once nightly. I live in Texas, and the air is dry!! You can also put pebble trays underneath your plants to increase moisture. Avoid areas with vents and drafts! Clustering plants, as I have, kind of creates a biodome of humidity as well. If you have ferns or extremely finicky plants, you can put them in a terrarium environment for steady moisture. I have a large aquarium tank that I am transforming for just this purpose. No fertilizer and less water during winter. Don't be hard on yourself! If your plants aren't thriving, remember that survival is the goal! 馃榿

Just a reminder of how God's blessings are everywhere and cost nothing!

Here's a lovely and simple wildflower arrangement I just made for myself. I cut all 3 wildflowers myself from the side of the railroad tracks nearby. I just wanted something to brighten up my place, as I've been struggling so much lately. I love the simple combination and the pickle jar vase matches the style just perfectly. I may have some twine or something for a simple bow around the jar top.

Hey, gardeners, we are expecting a freeze Sunday night/Monday morning. Some of our vulnerable plant friends include palms, azaleas, gardenias, camellias, hydrangeas, pittosporum, oleander, loquats, and cabbages & kale. You can keep your plants warm with a layer of mulch around their bases, to insulate their roots and help retain soil warmth. Aim for a fresh 2-4 inch layer. Don't forget to not pile mulch up like a volcano around the trunk or base of trees and shrubs. Leave a 3-4" circumference bare. If mulch supplies are low, shredded leaves will do just fine! Reapply mulch as it breaks down throughout the winter. Water plants thoroughly the day before a freez, since moist soil retains heat better. 20 minutes with most sprinkler systems is adequate. Dress your delicate plants for the occasion! Use frost cloth, frost blankets, or burlap, to create protective covers. Use stakes or tomato cages to prevent the cover from damaging the plants. Secure coverings with clothespins or clips to keep them from flying away.
Layer coverings for extra warmth when the temperatures dip really low. Consider first adding string lights beneath the covers to provide extra warmth. Give your container plants the royal treatment by bringing them indoors or to a sheltered spot like a garage or greenhouse. Potted plants are especially at risk of freezing, as their roots lack the insulation that comes from being in the ground. Wrap pots in bubble wrap or burlap to keep them snug and warm. Stay warm & happy gardening!

Did you know? Deadheading is important for your pansies and violas. What is deadheading? Simply removing the dead or dying blooms, by cutting or pinching off. See the difference in the first and second pics? The 2nd pic shows the same flat of plants after they've had the dead/dying blooms removed. I usually just pinch them off at the base of the stem. Why deadhead? One, for asthetics. It makes the plants look better. Two, removing spent blooms will encourage the plant to make more blooms. This is because if you don't remove those blooms, they will turn into a seed pod, see pics 3 & 4. Instead of putting out new blooms, the plant will focus its energy on creating more seed pods. How can you tell the difference between a seed pod and a new flower bud? The new buds appear as tiny little rolls of petals, see pic 5. If there is any doubt, do not remove. Wait a few days until it gets bigger, and you will know. You can discard the plucked seed pods, or you can save the seeds and plant them. It's a good idea to fertilize your plants as well. I like blood meal because the plants love it, and it deters rabbits. Just sprinkle it around the base of the plants. However, it does have a smell that may lure your dog into your flowerbed. So dog owners beware. It should be applied about every 2 weeks for rabbit protection, monthly just for the flowers. NOW you know!
