🏠 Homeowner Tip Tuesday

With summer trips starting, here’s a simple reminder:

Try to make your home look lived-in while you’re away.

A few easy steps can help:

• Use light timers
• Have mail and packages picked up
• Lock gates, side doors, and garage access points
• Avoid posting vacation photos in real time

A house that looks occupied is less likely to attract unwanted attention.

Small steps before you leave can prevent bigger headaches when you get home.

🏠 Homeowner Tip Tuesday

With watering season here, this is a great time to check your irrigation system.

Run each zone for a couple minutes and look for:

• Broken sprinkler heads
• Water spraying sidewalks, fences, or the house
• Leaks around valve boxes
• Dry patches in the lawn
• Overspray where it shouldn’t be going

Most issues are easy to spot once the system is running.

A quick check now can save water, money, and landscaping headaches later.

Fireplace refresh wrapped up 🔥

This project started as an older gas fireplace setup and was converted to a cleaner electric insert. We removed the old components, prepped the existing opening, installed the new fireplace, and built a custom removable stained wood trim surround to tie it into the stone.

Wi-Fi is convenient… but hardwired Ethernet is hard to beat.

For this project, I added a new Ethernet line from the second story down to the first floor, then finished it off with a clean wall plate for a much more reliable setup.

Great upgrade for home offices, gaming setups, smart TVs, access points, cameras, and network equipment that needs a stronger connection.

Need help cleaning up cables or adding a better connection where you actually need it? Hands On Idaho can help.

30 minutes of drywall repair sped up to 26 seconds.

Cut out the damaged section, squared up the opening, added a new patch, secured it, taped it, and got the first coat started.

Drywall is one of those repairs that looks quick in a timelapse but takes a few steps to fully finish — patch, mud, dry time, sanding, texture, and paint.

Not glamorous, but definitely satisfying when it starts coming back together.

🏠 Homeowner Tip Tuesday

Now that Memorial Day has passed, a lot of homeowners are getting into outdoor projects — yard work, patio lights, tools, smokers, and other outdoor equipment.

One thing that’s easy to overlook is outdoor power.

Before you start plugging everything in, check a few basics:

• Are your exterior outlets GFCI protected?
• Are you using outdoor-rated extension cords?
• Are plugs/connections kept off wet ground?
• Is one outlet being overloaded with too many devices?

With rain in the forecast this week, it’s a good reminder that outdoor electrical safety matters.

A few small checks can prevent bigger problems later.

Another small home tech project knocked out for a local homeowner 👊

This customer had been trying to get their wired Google Nest doorbell installed and ran into a few issues getting it mounted and powered correctly. We were able to get it mounted, wired in, and start narrowing down the power side of the problem.

Sometimes these “simple” smart home installs turn into a little troubleshooting — old wiring, hidden transformers, low voltage issues, chime wiring, etc. That’s exactly why it helps to have someone who’s comfortable with both the install side and the troubleshooting side.

Need help with a smart doorbell, TV mount, small home repair, or another project around the house?

Message Hands On Idaho and I’ll see how I can help.

🏠 Homeowner Tip Tuesday

Quick one this week —

Extension cords are meant to be temporary solutions, not permanent wiring.

When we bought our house in 2022, the previous owners had a koi pond in the backyard powered by an extension cord running all the way around the house to the front exterior outlet 😅

There was also a hot tub plugged into a standard outlet/circuit shared with a bunch of other things in the house.

It technically worked… but not correctly:
• The water barely stayed warm
• The jets struggled to run
• The circuit was overloaded constantly

It was a good reminder that there’s a difference between:
👉 “getting something to work”
and
👉 “getting it done right.”

A few good things to avoid:
• Extension cords under rugs
• Overloaded power strips
• Outdoor cords left out permanently
• Using extension cords as long-term fixes

Small shortcuts usually turn into bigger headaches later.
