One story became two, and the whole house changed with it. A full-width rear dormer and two front gables created a new second floor, while the first floor was reworked for the way this family lives now. This tile niche is one small example of the details that make a large transformation feel personal.

BEFORE: The original living room had a flat ceiling that concealed the roof structure above.

DURING: Opening the ceiling revealed the structure and the dramatic volume the finished room could gain.

AFTER: Raise the roof. Change the room. Removing the flat ceiling and finishing the vaulted structure brought light, height and a completely different feeling to this living space.

They didn't tell her right away. Throughout demo, our crew quietly set aside original wood salvaged from this carriage house — through three dumpsters worth of debris — and used it to build this custom little door, tucked under the stairs in the livingroom. "We have a surprise for you!" There's something special about carrying a piece of the old into the new.
