🚨BREAKING NEWS FROM THE FARM🚨
Well, it turns out Senator Gobbles has been hiding his true identity all along. 😂
I was convinced he was a Bronze Heritage turkey, but after watching him grow and his coloring develop, I’ve discovered that Senator Gobbles is actually a Chocolate turkey… and that’s a pretty big deal!
Chocolate turkeys are considered a rare heritage breed and are listed as critically endangered, with very small breeding populations remaining.
A few neat facts about Chocolate turkeys:
🤎 They get their name from their beautiful rich chocolate-brown feathers, legs, and beak.
🦃 They are a heritage breed developed in the United States and were historically raised on small family farms. They were almost wiped out during the Civil War because so many of their breeders were killed off or their folks eaten by hungry soldiers.
🌎 They are listed as critically endangered because so few breeding birds remain compared to commercial turkey varieties. The brown gene is a recessive gene and due to the dwindling population there will often be DNA of other heritage turkeys buried that can appear many generations later.
❤️ Heritage turkeys grow more slowly than grocery store turkeys, but they’re known for their hardiness, natural instincts, and ability to forage.
🥹 Apparently, I accidentally adopted a celebrity.
Honestly, I couldn’t be happier because this little guy has already stolen my heart. He’s the one that hops onto my arm whenever I hold it out, so now knowing he’s part of such a rare breed makes him even more special.
Long live Senator Gobbles. 🤎🦃🇺🇸
