No raised bed? No problem. Laundry baskets can make surprisingly great garden containers! 🌿 They’re affordable, portable, and perfect for small spaces — just make sure you add proper drainage and use a good-quality potting mix.
A few easy wins for basket growing:
🥔 Potatoes love deep containers
🥕 Carrots need loose soil
🍅 Tomatoes do best with support
🥒 Cucumbers can climb up a trellis
Small-space gardening can still bring big harvests!

Some plants grow better together. They share nutrients, repel pests, attract pollinators, and maximize space. Here are 6 proven combinations with ideal bed sizes.

TOMATOES + BASIL + MARIGOLDS — 4×4 ft
Basil repels aphids and improves tomato flavor. Marigolds deter nematodes and whiteflies. Plant basil between tomatoes, marigolds around the edge. Tomatoes need vertical space—add a stake or cage.

CARROTS + RADISHES + LETTUCE — 2×4 ft
Radishes break up soil for carrots and harvest before carrots need space. Lettuce shades soil, keeps it cool and moist. Compact combo perfect for small beds. Succession plant radishes every 2 weeks.

CUCUMBERS + DILL + NASTURTIUMS — 4×4 ft
Dill attracts beneficial insects that prey on cucumber pests. Nasturtiums trap aphids away from cucumbers. Let dill flower for maximum benefit. Train cucumbers up a trellis to save ground space.

BEETS + GARLIC + CHARD — 2×4 ft
Garlic repels aphids and leaf miners that attack beets and chard. All three are compact and share similar spacing. Garlic scent masks crops from pests. Plant garlic in fall for best bulbs.

PEPPERS + ONIONS + PARSLEY — 3×3 ft
Onions deter aphids and spider mites from peppers. Parsley attracts hoverflies that eat aphid eggs. Medium-sized bed works well. Onions also improve pepper flavor.

ZUCCHINI + NASTURTIUMS + BORAGE — 4×8 ft
Nasturtiums act as trap crop for squash bugs. Borage attracts pollinators essential for zucchini fruit set. Zucchini is a space hog—give it room or it will take over. One plant produces plenty.

Match bed size to plant needs. Crowded plants = pest problems and poor yields.
