Sometimes things in the garden are beautiful and sometimes we are holding things together with chip clips and zip ties. Just trying to keep the ranunculus cool and blooming a little longer. I’m not ready to say goodbye yet. Sorry neighbors, I know it’s ugly. Don’t worry Mother Nature is going to win this fight.

Usually I’m cursing the deer in my garden but if you are born here you get a special pass.

This flower has blown me away this season. Sweet William is a biennial plant. Meaning it takes two years to complete its life cycle. I planted this summer of 2025, it grew green leaves and then quietly slumbered through the winter. By the time this garden season came around I had forgotten what color I had even planted. This has been a most delightful surprise. I’ve used it as greenery before the flowers opened, love that little tuft of green, but once the flowers have started to open I’ve been in love with all the shades of pink and the height of these stems. Now that I have it, I can’t imagine my garden without it. I love when a new plant turns out this good. Some things are worth the wait, Sweet William is one of them.

Just some of what you’ll find in the flower stand this week. It’s a true reflection of what’s blooming in the garden right now. Ranunculus, anemone, delphinium, sweet William, cress, lupine, foxglove, Scabiosa and even a few stems of bleeding hearts.

I’ve been experimenting with pansies and violas this season to see if I can get long enough stems to use in arrangements. By selecting the right variety, planting them really close together and not letting them go to seed, I think I’m getting there. I just love the look of these in a vase.

The first Saturday in June is National Trails Day. Missoula has so many great options. Where is your favorite hiking spot? Bonus points if it’s dog friendly and loaded with wildflowers.

Ranunculus from odd little octopus to garden stunner. These flowers are having a moment in the garden right now and I am here for it. The layers of petals, the soft pastel colors, the amazing vase life, I love it all.

They can be a little high maintenance. You have to baby them for a long time, but once they get going you’ll forget all about the trouble they caused you.

While it’s hard for me to pick a favorite flower these divas are definitely on the list. Do you have a favorite flower or a list of top contenders?

Got Grads? I got you! Congratulations to all High School Seniors on your upcoming graduation this weekend. It’s a big step and I’m proud of you. Please make good choices with your celebrations. The mom in me has to say that.

Please note you don’t have to be or know a graduate to stop by the Powell Street Flower Stand today, I have something for everyone.

Sometimes my walking away is the biggest motivation for the garden to get growing. I went away for the weekend and came home to the first of many full buckets of the season. The garden really loved the rain while I was gone. I guess not checking the flower progress every couple hours did us both some good.

You’ll find some new faces in the Flower Stand tomorrow. We’ve said good-bye to the tulips until next spring and while that is sad it just means we are making room for the new comers.

STOCK Such a boring name for the wonder that is found in this flower. I feel like not many people know about stock, but once you’ve smelled it you’ll remember it forever. It’s easily the flower I enjoy the most for its fragrance.

ANEMONE These happy little flowers are amazingly cold tolerant so they are one of the earliest flowers I start growing for the year. They have been plugging along since February. For the first few months they don’t look like much and then suddenly they are popping up stems in shades from white, to bright pinks and purples (blues) and back to soft gorgeous pastels. I love these for their vase life and their shape.

LUPINE A solid, dependable perennial in the garden. Mostly found in shades of purple at my house, I do get lucky and find the occasional bloom in other colors. Lupine is fun because it does what it wants. Put it in a vase and it will bend and twist and grow towards the light making your bouquet even more fun and whimsical.

I love how every flower has its season. I never get bored of flowers because they are always changing depending on the weather. It makes it so easy to appreciate the moment we are in and also look forward to what is coming.
