🎼 Modesto's Music Man, Frank Mancini 🎶

A Italian native who visited Modesto to play at the Strand Theater and loved it so much here that he stayed!

He help found the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, the Stanislaus County Boys Band (now MoBand), and was an award-winning band director at Modesto High.

The Mancini Bowl in Graceda Park is named after him, of course!

Since 1874, the city of Modesto has celebrated the 4th of July with a parade.

Sadly, due to Covid-19, this year's 147th parade was cancelled. Although we're missing this tradition today we hope you and your family have a happy & safe 4th of July! 🇺🇸⠀

In the 1940s Burge’s Drive-In was the place to be! With the tagline “Good Homemade Food and Pastries” it quickly became the local hangout and a cruising pitstop. 🍔

Adding to the cool factor was a remote DJ from the radio station KFIV who would broadcast from the drive-in and take song dedications from young love birds in the parking lot! 🎶

Burge’s role in cruising history would be used as the inspiration for Mels Drive-In in the American Graffiti movie years later. 🚘

MHS is the oldest high school in Modesto and one of the oldest in California. 🚌

It was established in 1883 by Ruliff Stephen Holway and the first graduating class in 1887 had only TEN students!

To all of the high school seniors in Modesto, we'd like to say CONGRATULATIONS! Your accomplishment is one to be celebrated! While your ceremony is canceled, your achievement still remains! 🎓

Effective today the State of California has approved our county variance application. This new state approval will allow for our county to move forward into an expanded stage 2 with modifications such as:

▪️Destination retail (retail stores), including shopping malls and swap meets
▪️Dine-in restaurants (other amenities, like bars or gaming areas, are not permitted in Stage 2)

The opening of schools for in-person learning will be delayed, as more planning still needs to take place. The Public Health Officer engaged in discussions with local Superintendents beginning in March and continues the collaborative process to assess and plan.

The boom in irrigated farming caused Modesto’s population not only to rebound from the losses of the 1890s but to nearly double to 4,034 by 1910.⠀
⠀
Irrigation brought tremendous prosperity and new buildings rose all over Modesto and phone service reached 466 addresses in 1906.⠀
⠀
Stable water supply also made farmland much more valuable and prices rose five- to ten-fold. ⠀

In honor of Modesto’s 150th Anniversary this month we will be celebrating our local Agriculture & Industry.

Today we would like to thank Foster Farms and the many dedicated employees who are hard at work as they continue to provide poultry products to millions of families across America.

We also would like to thank you for your donation of over two million servings of poultry to COVID-19 hunger relief efforts.
