March and warming temperatures mean that overwintering Monarchs are separating from their clusters to search for water. Monarchs should begin their migration north within the next couple of weeks. We hope to help support the Monarch butterfly population as well as create learning opportunity for students of all ages by creating a certified Monarch Waystation. Monarchs have daily resource needs as they migrate through our area. Milkweed is the host plant for Monarch caterpillars and the butterflies themselves need nectar from flowers to fuel their flight. If you’re a gardener and have some milkweed or spreading perennials to divide and share, we welcome them! In addition to perennial plants, seeds for butterfly attracting annuals are welcome too. Here is a list of plants we are looking for: Alyssum, Aster, Bee Balm, Butterfly Bush, Calendula, Cosmos, Daylily, Delphinium, Dianthus, Fennel, Globe Thistle, Goldenrod, Hollyhock, Lavender, Liatris, Marigold, Musk Mallow, Nasturtium, Oregano, Phlox, Purple Coneflower, Queen Anne's Lace, Sage, Scabiosa, Shasta Daisy, Stonecrop, Verbena, Yarrow, Zinnia. We would like to get planting so please respond if you're interested in this area of our community garden. Which weekend in April would you be able to come help plant?

Seeds and bright, fresh vegetables - great coffee table material! Do you have any old gardening magazines or seed catalogs to donate? Seed catalogs are great resources for learning about the numerous different varieties of vegetables and flowers that are available. Maybe we can start a lending library of gardening resources to help us all learn more! Hope your weekend is going well.

If you can’t wait to start growing something green – give this fun activity a try: First, find yourself some good dirt and a few seeds, seedlings or cuttings. Then you’ll need something to plant in - check out this video on how to make Newspaper Pots. Don't forget to water and when the time is right we can pop these right into the garden!

Recycling old newspapers into DIY origami newspaper pots is really quick and easy. You can make these ahead of time and store them folded inside one of your ...

Hi Everyone! There's sure to be a ton of green popping up after all this rain. Now's a great chance to daydream about and plan for our Community Garden. Here are some things we could use: hoses, drip irrigation and rain barrel supplies along with experience in creating watering systems, soil amendments and mulching materials, vegetable and flower seeds, seedlings and cuttings, various garden items including staking materials, row markers, twine, fencing, border, and raised bed materials, tools and equipment. Also, do you know anyone who could rototill a plot or two? Please contact us if you'd like to contribute!

Hope you can join us in a few hours at the Monessen City Building in Room A. I have a small activity planned, not sure how many of you can attend so we may need to share or work in groups. There's lots to talk about so stop in between 5:30 and 7:00 tonight to find out more and please invite anyone you know who's interested.
