Historically, the transition between bridge deck segments and approach slabs has compromised ride quality. Diamond grinding solves this, but specifications usually require longitudinal grinding over the entire bridge length and width. To execute this successfully and avoid costly penalties, contractors should follow some simple steps including protecting the expansion joints, ensuring tight controls and adding additional concrete thickness during paving, to name a few.

In his recent paper, "To waterproof bridge decks or not," George Vorobieff of Head to Head International makes the case for diamond grinding durable as an alternative to traditional waterproofing methods on bridge decks.

Vorobieff argues that diamond grinding offers a more durable, environmentally friendly and safer driving surface, potentially lasting over 20 years.
