Just went through all my seeds for gardening and realized planting/stratifying is gonna kick off in less than a month already! Glad I have actually made a sowing schedule this year to try and stage my plantings in a more organized manner. Gonna have to start getting a nursery area cordoned off for starting transplants, and I have a lot of work to do still to get all my garden beds prepped as the ground warms up.
Biggest thing rn is to get an LED light set up for cactus germination and build an air prune frame to set up outside to get some different tree and shrub seeds started stratifying. I also need to determine how much PVC I will need to implement above-ground irrigation piping to save myself some precious time and labor on watering this year (and years to come).
This year I’ll be experimenting with a terraforming technique called “earth smiles” where I dig basins around which earth will be mounded up as a large berm in a sprawling horseshoe shape. These bermed basins will form small micro-climates which will protect plants situated within the depression from harsh wind, while fruiting cactus, shrubs, and native grasses will be cultivated on the berms to prevent them from eroding and also provide elevation to aid drainage since my yard has a very high ground water table. Excited to share my progress!
