Landscaping practices impact our environment by affecting surrounding ecosystems via non point source pollution. Runoff from chemicals and fertilizers over applied to lawns make their way into bodies of water and underground aquifers. They require twice the water an ornamental landscape requires. Moreover, residential irrigation systems are often inefficient due to design or lack of maintenance. P

roperly applying high quality chemicals and fertilizers to lawns, and irrigate more efficiently.
2. Landscape using ornamental plants and ground covers that do not require chemicals and survive on minimal applications of fertilizer and water.
3. Maintaining and improving existing irrigation systems so that water is not wasted. My humble hope is that through this business I can help others to understand the impact their landscape is having on the surrounding ecosystems, and how they can take steps to make their yards more efficient & practical, costing less money.

Here are a few photos of a recent landscape project: A no lawn landscape. Yep, that's right. No lawn landscape. After a while the maintenance diminishes to minimal trimming/weeding. No mowing. No emissions from mowing. Not a lot of irrigation, if any. No chemicals. No fertilizer after two years. And, most of the shrubs/flowers benefit local fauna like butterflies, honey bees, and hummingbirds.

Tracking rainfall became an interest back in grad school. After graduation, I never stopped collecting rainfall data at my house. From 1998 to 2011 the FAWN (Florida Automated Weather Network) collection site nearest to my home averaged 47.04 inches of rainfall. From 2012-2023 my home in Sanford averaged 55.14 inches of rain. That's a great improvement. You can see we had a couple of low rainfall years in 2015 and 16, but overall we saw a 17% increase in rainfall over the last 12 years. This is a good thing, but I wonder how this has been impacted by climate change, if at all? Hotter average temps mean the atmosphere can hold more moisture for storms maybe? But also our population has seen record growth over the past decade increasing 1-2% each year which taxes our aquifers even more. I still think we need to keep refining our water conservation practices in the residential landscape, starting with accurate scheduling, rain sensor management, and use of tough plants. These aspects have always been central to the focus of Earthwise Horticultural Services. Thanks for reading, wishing everyone a great 2024.
