How I overhauled my tool garage for less than $1,000:
1. LOTS of sweat equity/elbow grease šŸ˜‚ I did the majority of the work myself, with some painting & moving things help from hubby & son.
2. FREE large wooden storage cabinets! (Ok, in reality hubby ā€œpaidā€ the previous owner with a couple of bottles of bourbon 🄃 ) Scored these on our local ā€œbuy nothingā€ page, and they are KEY to storing SO MUCH STUFF! (It was a several hour process of helping unpack, disassemble, load & transport these beasts though… hubs & previous cabinet owner helped a LOT with getting these to our house… )
3. $243 - storage container rental for a month. We didn’t have anywhere to store all my stuff while cleaning up the walls, so renting temporary storage from 1-800-PackRat for the win.
4. $255 - flammable material safety storage container for my collection of spray cans, stains & finishes.
5. $234 - 1 gallon of Drylok primer & 4 gallons of Drylok Extreme waterproofing paint. The walls were NASTY and there were so many crevices that soaked up so much of this stuff so we definitely tried to overdo it here.
6. $58 - wheel kit to convert low storage cabinet into a mobile miter saw station.
7. $150 - misc materials for storage: pressure treated wood to put everything on top of (I didn’t seal the floor), tapcons & washers to fasten things to the wall, rigid insulation, glue & great stuff to better seal up old window opening (šŸ¤žšŸ»no more mice!)
8. Scrap wood pile & pocket hole jig & screws I already had - used to fill in window opening to hang pegboard, make outdoor tool storage rack, long wood storage racks, work surface storage rack, clamp storage racks, and any other little things as needed!
Total damage: $940
How happy it makes me having everything organized and easy to grab & put away & not trip over piles in the middle of the floor? PRICELESS!!! šŸ˜šŸ„¹ā˜ŗļøšŸ˜

Some fun constraints to work with on this project…
1) small footprint but tall ceilings = major Dexter mode on the drop cloths, carefully weaving around all the furniture, and maxing out on the reach of my painting pole when painting the ceiling in this room! (Yay for only being 5’5ā€ šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø)
2) Plaster in bad shape but a limited budget = a discussion with the homeowner about the options available (ranging from ā€œjust paint over itā€ to ā€œdays worth of trying to patch with fiberglass and texture over the existing patches on patches on patchesā€) and settling on a combination of caulk on the small cracks, and just applying a texture layer over the worst of the cracks & patches (with the warning/caveat that it will crack again in the future at some point).
The last two pictures show my attempt to camouflage some of the worst cracks & previous patches while working within the scope/budget constraints of the client… the lipstick is kind of working I think? šŸ¤”šŸ’‹šŸ·
Onto the walls next week!

My garage overhaul went mostly to plan… the cabinet side worked out like I hoped! The other side had some changes… the yard tools & gardening stuff wound up taking up a bit more space, and we actually managed to put all our paddle boards over in our other garage where all the life jackets and other water toys were already living. So the rooftop carrier & outside/garden stuff took up more space then originally planned for, but now I’m able to store the table saw in front of the carrier. I did not have a good spot for that guy in my original plan! 😬 And a major success was scored because I could get my ā€œtemporaryā€ long trim storage out of our other everyday/sports things garage. Win win! Some minor bike reorganization and now we can get those in/out much easier again!

New and improved garage reveal!!! Finally got the last cabinet in & (mostly) loaded up today! It’s already 3000% better than it was… so much easier to move around in and to get tools out and put them away! Now just need to get some outlets & more overhead lights installed!

Made myself a couple of cute little outdoor side tables out of some free 12x24 tiles and redwood 2x4’s! This furniture building thing is kind of fun! šŸ˜
Can’t wait to put these to good use this summer! And now I can cross one thing off of my list of 37 other things I’d like to build or make! šŸ˜‚ (which of course is separate from the list of 26 things that I ā€˜have’ to do around the house… 🫣)

Life as both a renovation contractor and a mom… always fun being the one who prefers to make the messes, but is now responsible enough (most of the time) to be the one cleaning them up as well. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

(Spoiler alert: I went and threw a load in the washing machine and THEN proceeded to make a bunch of sawdust šŸ˜‰ because adulting is fun 😜)

Had some little details to finish at a previous clients’ house today… main one was to finally finish finish off the dining room wainscoting now that her floors are finally refinished! (After she got a whole new kitchen too!) I wound up adding a little more detail to the shoe moulding around this heat register, and then made some minor adjustments to two of her doors so they worked better. But the best part? How it only took me 6 minutes to put away an entire car full of tools in my new and improved garage! šŸ¤—šŸ™ŒšŸ» Makes me so happy! 😁

Getting scrappy with it! I’ve been putting the wood scrap pile to good use in my garage. Things I’ve made out of all of the never ending odds n ends:
- improved bike racks… added some taller wheel supports with 30-60-90 triangular braces to some basic bike racks left by the previous homeowners.
- work table/surface rack… simple rectangular boxy holder to keep my work tables/surfaces from leaning on other things.
- long lumber holder… putting some 2x4’s, 3/4ā€ plywood, construction screws, tapcons & fender washers to good use.
- yard implement wall rack/holder inspired by version.
- some outdoor side tables (in progress) … ok so these aren’t really being made out of scrap wood, but more so that I don’t have to find a place to store the 5 pieces of redwood 2x4’s I cleaned out of an elderly neighbor’s garage šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤”
- clamp racks/holders… yay they’re not just piled in a corner anymore!
The garage is 95% done… waiting to resolve an issue with the flame proof cabinet I got to store all the stains & finishes I’ve accumulated, so that is the very last piece that needs to be put in yet! So close!!! Can’t wait to give you the final tour later this week!!!

Since I finished painting this light, figured I should actually hang up my historic plaque that’s just been sitting on the windowsill for 18 months!
