One of the biggest questions I get is where I get my seed.

I try to save and use my farm grown seed but sometimes will buy from Amish or naturally grown sources.

In the case of carrot, which I grow A LOT of, I will save the tops from my processing of carrots to replant for seed.

By planting the top of a carrot you will not grow a new carrot but you will grow flowers from what you can produce seed.

When he do a carrot picking project I’ll end up with hundreds of tops. I will sow these in a row outside so that they will produce a massive open pollinated seed crop.

Each carrot top has the potential of creating 1000 flowers.... you figure every time I plant 300 carrot tops I’m harvesting about a Lb of carrot seed.

Between what my farm consumes including snacks for my son and all my pickling projects, I easily grow about 10 Lb of seed a year and sometimes more.

Sometimes I’ll run out of my rainbow blend and will hit the seed store to stock up but I never run out of my personally developed varieties.

I haven’t bought lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower ,Broccoli, garlic, corn, beans pumpkins, squash, pepper, tomato, or onion seed in years !!

How are we preserving tomatoes without canning? I don't have a canner atm so im still not sure how to preserve them without. Ive done tomato powder but its such a pain to slice every little tomato in half for it. Even if it isn't specifically preserving but maybe smth I can keep in the fridge for a few weeks even, what can I make? This is around the amount I'm picking every other day or so and its getting to be quite a lot lol

I did it! I made dandelion patties! And they are soooo good!!! After sampling the flowers first, with and without the green base, I decided that I did not want the bitter green portion in this recipe. So I spent a grueling hour picking the green off of them.
The texture is soo neat! My daughter said “is there meat in there?” Because it sort of resembles the texture of a hamburger!
Here is my recipe:
Approximately 2 loose cups of dandelion flowers
Two large eggs, beaten before adding
A half cup of flour
Salted all over, generously
Black pepper shaken all over, generously
Garlic powder, approximately 1 teaspoon
Mix it all together until it’s nice and stuck together and there is no flour showing
Roll balls and press them to make patties
Place into a frying pan coated in hot oil on medium
Flip after 3-5 minutes and cook another 3-5 minutes

I’ve seen many posts asking about storing empty jars. So I’m sharing the wisdom of my grandmother. She taught me this in the 1960’s and I have been doing this ever since.

These jars are not sealed as this is water. It is clean water that can be used for washing or for consumption. If you are concerned about stored water, remember, IT’S WATER. You can boil it before consuming it. As long as your source is safe, the water should be safe.

These are my ‘empty’ canning jars. If you notice, they aren’t really empty. They are filled with water. My grandmother always said that an empty jar takes up just as much space as a full one. NEVER put an empty jar on the shelf. If you don’t have anything to can or store in it, fill it with clean water.

This has come in handy many times. In February 2021, here in Texas, we had a deep freeze. We were without power and water for about a week. We kept warm with a fireplace and blankets. For water, I had my canning jars. Even the small 4oz jelly jars had water in them.

The stores were out of bottled water, so no one could get any for over a week. I had some neighbors who knew I had jars full begging me for my water. I had shared this wisdom nugget and been ridiculed for it. I see posts in other groups and videos saying to stock up on bottled water. I’m doing what my grandmother said. I’ll keep my empty jars full of water

buy butter from a local farm and it comes in a 2lb tub. To keep it manageable I will dump the butter out of the tub and portion it into sticks until I need them in my butter dish.
During this process, there is inevitably some scraps of butter that break off and they just go back into the tub and get used up first on toast in the morning.
Today, much to my delight, the entire tub came out mostly unscathed and from the lid out came a perfect butter circle. I’m hopeful this group will enjoy this magnificent butter circle as much as I do, because my teenagers aren’t impressed.
No banana because the teenagers ate them all. They also ate the butter circle.

Wife and I are struggling to keep our 9yr old cat from eating the spider plant. The second the office door is open she’s in there and goes at the plant then proceeds to puke it up 30 min later… fun times.

Yes, keeping the door closed is obvious but nobody is perfect, and getting some air flow in there is needed.

We can’t have a plant stand as she has also knocked that down with the assistance of the dogs.

Wife really enjoys having them and is wanting to give up on all of them (about 10+ total) because of this.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I got a smaller rib roast and cut it into 4 steaks. They were excellent. What can I do with the bone part? I’ll admit I probably cut it up wrong, but it was good
