After 14 years in our Nashville house, I’ve been getting ansty and longing for some change - not overwhelming change, but something new for the eye to land on every day. So this summer I mustered up the courage to swap out our beloved Philadelphia Harlequin wallpaper (designed circa 1807) in a custom colorway by Adelphi Paper Hangings for another of their papers, Bamboo and Drapery (circa 1811). The change is exactly what I had hoped for. It doesn’t feel drastic - we still have an entry hall filled with color and shape and depth - but there’s a freshness to the new paper - more organic, a bit brighter - that feels just right for our family after nearly 15 years in this house. My daughters (photo 1) are now 21 and 18, our sweet puppy Ellie (photo 1 & 3) has passed on and our new baby George (photo 2) just arrived a week ago. It’s fun to watch a house change and grow, just as we do, and nice to be able to see it in new ways. 📷 1&3 circa 2012 williamwaldronphoto

Scenes from a mythical two weeks in Corfu with my family, my oldest and best friends, their children, wonderful new friends, sunshine, good food and the healing waters of the Ionian Sea. With many thanks to Gallivant ltd and to the Geracaris family for their warm welcome to Villa Posillipo Corfu where the spirit of the Durrells and the beauty of the island was all around us. 🇬🇷

Pictures hardly do justice to this collection of terre mêlée cachepots made in Languedoc and made for Reed Smythe. The blue and yellow pattern is so unexpected but so pretty, and the chinoiserie monkey heads on the rounded version are so cheeky. They are great for any arrangement or plant, but I’ve also discovered they make a lovely champagne cooler. I need a little yellow in my life right now, and these are making me happy. Plus, how much do we love the way the cerulean color of the crystal match striker picks up on the blue in the exquisite glaze. Hoping you are headed into a sunshiny summer weekend.

It’s always a joy to see how our customers and friends use Reed Smythe wares. These hand-cut and fired ceramic obelisk vases in various sizes rest on tiny coquillage feet and are among my favorite of all our offerings.

I don’t usually share personal news in this space. But because Reed Smythe & Co. grew out of a generational friendship between two Mississippi Delta families - the Reeds and the Smythes - it seems okay this one time to re-post something highly personal in this more public place.

I was so lucky to have Rick Smythe as my Daddy. He was an iconoclast through and through. Whenever my sister and I did something scary or un-prescribed, his refrain was “go ahead on girl!” He was proud when we did what that made us afraid, things that stretched us. But he didn’t have to go far away from home like we did to stretch himself. He spent most of his life on the same road in Tribbett, Mississippi, mostly in the same house, and always on the same land that his Grandfather and Daddy and brother farmed, which his sons farm now, and which I have no doubt some of his grandsons will farm in the future. Unsurprisingly to all who knew him, he died as he lived: on his own terms. Last Wednesday, against statewide extreme heat warnings, doctor’s orders and the urging of his beloved wife, he woke up, as he did every day, to farm - an active verb if ever there was one. When his truck got stuck in a muddy ditch, he pulled out a walking stick he’d made himself, headed out on the turnrow to walk the 2 miles or so to the main road. He didn’t have a phone. No GPS. And when he got hot and tired, he lay down next to his corn field, crossed his legs at the ankles, put his hat over his face, and took some rest. He never woke up. On Sunday, we buried him on his land in a grave that was dug by hand, by his 5 children, his wife of 46 years, his 9 grandchildren and members of a community of love that he nurtured over a lifetime. As much as we miss him and grieve the loss of him, he lived and died as he chose. I hope we all get to go out that way. Godspeed Daddy. I love you beyond all words and all telling.
