Huge thank you to Flat Bend Apiary for hosting such an inviting and educational event! One of my favorite parts of beekeeping is getting to show people how fascinating and rewarding working with honey bees can be.
We got to help sixteen new beekeepers gain hands on experience making splits, inspecting hives, marking queens, checking mite counts, and even navigating an unexpected queenless colony together.
What a beautiful day of learning and community. Let’s do it again soon! 🐝

First hive removal and first time using a bee vacuum! The bee vacuum made the process much easier and faster. It was a huge learning experience but I’m already ready to do another one! 🐝

About a month ago, I discovered that this hive was queenless. They had reached a point where they no longer had the resources to create another queen, specifically, no eggs between 1-3 days old.
In hopes of keeping this colony independent and avoiding combining them, I added a frame of fresh eggs from another colony and left the queenless hive to decide their next steps.
After checking on them today, I’m happy to report we’ve got tons of fresh eggs, the new queen is doing great!

Tree bees! I actually hate removing colonies from trees unless absolutely necessary. The homes they create for themselves in the wild are so cool. 🐝🌳
