Regular glass = breaks and lets heat through
Fire glass (basic) = blocks flames
Gel fire glass = turns into a heat shield when things get extreme

Tempered glass is under internal stress (that’s what makes it strong), but NiS inclusions behave differently over time:
• The inclusion slowly changes structure (phase change) after the glass is made
• This causes it to expand slightly
• Because the glass is already under tension, that tiny expansion can trigger a sudden failure

Result: the glass can shatter spontaneously, even without impact.

At Schone Windows, we recommend using custom-bent aluminum flashing that protrudes beyond the window frame. The flashing is securely siliconed into place and then sealed with waterproof tape to ensure any water running down the wall is directed away from the opening.

About one hour per window—a small investment that prevents costly future water infiltration and headaches.

1968 is when my family landed in Halifax — and this is where it all started.

In 1985, the next chapter began — expanding across North America and bringing together generations of expertise.

From that evolution came SCHÖNE Windows, created to serve the U.S. market with European-designed systems and a relentless focus on quality.

Today, three generations later, we’ve grown into a leading manufacturer of high-performance moving glass walls and window systems — serving residential, multi-family, and commercial projects.

But at the core, nothing has changed.

It still comes down to hard work, precision, and the same values that started it all back in 1968.

Back home after a week on the road—visiting customers, walking trade shows, and pushing Schone Windows forward every step of the way.

But nothing—and I mean nothing—beats this kind of welcome.

Walk through the door and there he is… tail going a mile a minute, pure excitement, like I’ve been gone for years. No emails, no meetings, no deadlines—just that raw, unconditional energy.

It’s a good reminder: we work hard, we travel, we build—but home is where the real reward is.
