“Sing a song of juniper, Whose song is seldom sung, Whose needles prick the finger, Whose
berries burn the tongue…” Anyone with a juniper in their yard would agree with the words of
20th century poet Robert Francis from his work Sing a Song of Juniper. Long sleeves and
gloves are a must when cleaning out or pruning this hearty evergreen. As for the berries, if
you’ve had a sip of gin you’ve experienced the burn of a juniper berry. Some of the more
adventurous among you might have even seasoned some meat with these little not-really berry
berries. Head on over to RAG Thyme blog to read more about this native staple in New
Hampshire yards! Link in bio.

Sedum stand out among the plants that can go in a garden. Not because of their size or their flowers, but because they bring a bit of texture and a desert feel to a space later in the season. Though, to be fair, we have seen some of the Autum Joy variety that grow to Jurassic proportions when they are in a happy place.
Sedum are good for along the edge of garden tiers and between rocks for when a bit of green is desired. They hug the ground or cascade over an edge and fill in where other plants might not thrive.
Sedum are drought tolerant as well so even during those longer dry spells they’ll need just a sprinkling of water compared to other plants. Read more about them to find out just how they keep that moisture when other plants are begging for a drink! Read more on the RAG Thyme site!

Some bushes just come with controversy. It would seem reasonable that something called the butterfly bush would be a benefit to pollinators and something always welcome in a garden.
It certainly is lovely to look at when it is full of sweet smelling and colorful blooms in the summer. And once in full bloom it is regularly visited by bees, butterflies and even hummingbirds. It’s speculated that pollinators might visit this beauty over other local flora giving it an unfair advantage.
All the more reason to think about balance and plant diversity when planting a garden! Link in RAG Thyme bio to learn more about the butterfly bush.
