A central hallway was opened up from a previous dark maze - light comes in from all sides of the house, including from the relocated study that has large salvaged antique pocket doors.
The former study, which cut off the backyard, is entirely opened up to the house now for a family craft space.

Mise en place can be translated as “Everything in its place,” and the built-ins at our Irish Channel project ensures just that. Carefully-designed closets, pantries, laundry room, and a reading nook maximize wall space for storage and even manage to conceal a secret trundle bed.

The design intent for this project was to create a more open and airy feel in an otherwise dark and maze-like home. Bringing more daylight to the interior was also a key driving force for design.

The kitchen, dining, and living areas were opened up to one great room, with structural modifications that happened while adding a second floor.
Rooms off of the main corridor were opened up all the way to back door for connected living spaces.

Three awards. One project. Endless gratitude. 🏆

We’re honored that The Syd has been recognized by , , and with awards over the last 12 months.

This project pushed us in all the right ways—from a challenging site to a pandemic-era timeline—and we’re proud of what it represents: thoughtful design, bold choices, and a whole lot of trust from our client.

Thank you to our peers for seeing what we saw in The Syd. Onward.

This Irish Channel home may look historic, and lies within a Historic District, however, it was brand-new when the present owners bought it in 2015. It was originally designed to look like a shotgun with a camelback. Because it was a new house, an unusual strategy was able to be employed by embracing the Greek Revival traditions of the Irish Channel: a full double gallery was added to the front facade in order to gain additional space on a constrained lot. Pains were taken to ensure that accurate architectural proportions were respected and details were incorporated, such as wood dentils, true divided lite slip head wood windows and iron railings.

This master bath was outdated and had a small shower, but felt crowded with a giant whirlpool bath tub our clients never used. Now they have a bright, clean space to start their day in, with blue and green accents and a luxuriously large shower.

Shaped by feedback from students and faculty, the renovation blends historic charm from its original opening in 1908 with modern upgrades like state-of-the-art studios, review rooms, and a gallery space. The ribbon cutting, remarks from university leaders, and a tour of the stunning transformation commemorate the exciting completion of an extensive four-year renovation project.

Thanks to for this photo and to all the members who came out to tour the Mitzie, winner of the 2024 IDEA Award of Excellence in the Hospitality Small category. Our team enjoyed sharing insights and behind-the-scenes details about the renovation process, along with some of the building’s unique history.

Fun fact: Did you know this boutique hotel was named after a lost Boston Terrier from the early 20th century?

We shared our NOLA snow pics but have you seen the photos from above? As architects, we’re always tuned in to the weather—it shapes how we design, build, and protect the places we call home. But the January snow storm was something else entirely. Captured from above, rolling over the Louisiana coast was a breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime sight. Seeing our subtropical landscape blanketed in snow, even briefly, was an unforgettable reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the resilience of the built environment. A historic moment, frozen in time—literally. ❄️

Our principal architect Jessica’s dog Summer turned 13, and it was celebrated with a “Bark” Mitzvah at Felicity.🐕️ One of our favorite parts of developing historic properties is all the memories that get to continue on in the spaces. This was definitely one of those moments! A place that was originally designated solely for its congregation, is now a building open for everyone to experience and appreciate.
