Winter blues Day 2. Update your home’s lighting

What better way to brighten and warm your spirits this winter than with the perfect lighting. Not to mention it’s an easy and affordable way to make your home a more comfortable place to spend time.

Instead of sticking with whatever fixtures came in your home when you bought it, you can use the doldrums of winter as an excuse to try this simple home improvement. Light fixtures are affordable and can often be installed without an expert. Whether you repurpose your holiday string lights or invest in a daylight lamp, the options are endless. You can also completely change the ambiance in your home simply by replacing any harsh white bulbs with calming yellow ones.

Caught a case of the winter blues? The next 7 days we're giving you tips on how to tackle those pesky winter❄️ blues!

We all know winter can be a difficult time of year for many of us, especially after all the holiday excitement dwindles down, and is still keeping us locked indoors. The days are short and dark, the temperatures are around freezing, the weather has made everything gloomy, so it's no wonder why many of us start to feel the winter blues settling in.

But there is hope. Start by planning out a few simple home improvements you can do to easily transform your space into a happier and cozier place to be. Sprucing up your home can be worthwhile during any season, but certain projects are perfect for giving you a much-needed mood boost during this time of year. Plus during the winter humidity is lower, so drying times are decreased.

If you are like many others that suffer from a seasonal funk, consider some home improvement projects to help you beat those winter blues, no matter what mother nature throws you way.

Painting your rooms you spend the most time in.

Day 1's tip.... Repaint living spaces

Feeling like your home is in need of a dramatic change? A new coat of paint can be a cheap and effective way to switch things up in no time. During this time when many of us need a mood booster, take a page out of the psychology book, and surround yourself with colors that help you relax and increase happiness. In general, cool colors have a calming effect, while warm colors add comfort and can be invigorating. White can help brighten rooms by reflecting light. It makes a small space feel larger and more open, which can help you feel more energized.

Painting can require some patience, especially if you are considering a brand new color, but it’s easy enough for even a DIY beginner to accomplish. And, with the right attitude, a few friends(socially distanced of course), and some of your favorite music, you can make repainting your walls fun, plush feel accomplished. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your painting project, consider hiring a local painting company to tackle it for you, being involved in the process of picking out colors, and coming up with a plan is just as satisfying when you see the end results.

12 Tasks to Tackle This Fall

The days are getting shorter, and the nights are getting cooler. The kids are trudging off to school again with their backpacks, and leaves are falling from the trees.

Yep, it’s official: Fall is almost here. Now’s the time to finish up any pre-winter maintenance projects and get your home and yard ready.

Take care of these 12 tasks to get your home clean, warm and cozy for the cool days to come.

Exterior prep
1. Fix cracks in concrete and asphalt
Depending on where you live, these may be the last weeks this year when it will be warm and sunny enough to repair driveway and sidewalk cracks.

2. Clean out the gutters
No one loves this job, but we all need to do it annually. A few hours of work can prevent big problems later on.

While you’re up on that ladder, visually inspect your roof for damaged shingles, flashing or vents. You can also inspect the chimney for any missing mortar and repair it by tuck-pointing, if needed.

3. Turn off outdoor plumbing
Drain outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems, and cover them to protect them from the freezing weather to come.

4. Start composting
If you don’t already have compost bins, now’s the time to make or get some. All those accumulated autumn leaves will bring you gardening gold next summer!

5. Clean outdoor furniture and gardening tools
It may not yet be time to put them away, but go ahead and clean your outdoor furniture and gardening tools so they’re ready for storage over the winter.

6. Plant bulbs for spring-blooming flowers
Plant bulbs in October, as soon as the soil has cooled down, to reap big rewards next spring. If you’ve never planted bulbs before, select a spot in your yard that gets full sun during the day.

Interior prep

7. Prepare your furnace for winter duty
If you didn’t already do it last spring, consider getting your furnace professionally serviced in time for the cold season. At a minimum, visually inspect your furnace and replace the furnace filter before you start using it on a daily basis.

8. Clean the fireplace and chimney
Clean out the fireplace, inspect the flue, and ensure the doors and shields are sound. Have the chimney professionally swept if needed. Now’s also the time to stock up on firewood!

9. Keep the warm air inside and the cold air outside
Inspect your windows and doors. Check weatherstripping by opening a door, placing a piece of paper in the entryway and closing the door. The paper should not slide back and forth easily. If it does, the weatherstripping isn’t doing its job.

Also, now’s the time to re-caulk around windows and door casings, if needed.

10. Light the way
Bring as much light into your home as you can for the colder, darker months. To accentuate natural light, clean your windows and blinds, especially in rooms that get a lot of sunlight.

Add lighting to darker spaces with new lamps. And consider replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs.

11. Create a mudroom
Even if you don’t have a dedicated mudroom in your home, now’s a good time to think about organizing and stocking an entryway that will serve as a “mudroom” area for cold and wet weather.

Put down an indoor-outdoor rug to protect the floor. A fun and rewarding weekend project is to build a wooden shoe rack, coat rack or storage bench for your entryway.

12. Home safety check
Replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide monitors. A good way to remember to do this is to always replace the batteries when you change the clock for daylight saving time.

Create a family fire escape plan, or review the one you already have. Put together an emergency preparedness kit so you’re ready for any winter power outages.

Once you finish with your autumn home checklist, you can enjoy the season in your warm, comfortable home.

Here an outdoor spring cleaning checklist to use for your home this year:

-Clean the front porch. Remove all furniture and decorations from the front porch and power wash it. If you don’t have a power washer then a water hose spray nozzle will do just fine. Be sure and spray the underneath of your patio roof to get rid of spider webs. Clean the light fixtures too!

-Wash outdoor furniture. Depending on what the decorations are on your porch, wash them appropriately. Ours can be sprayed off after we remove the cushions and the tables can be cleaned with glass cleaner.

-Clean the front porch mat.

-Wash the front door.

-Repeat the first 4 steps on the back porch.

-Clean and organize your garage. Throw out anything that is broken or that you know you aren’t ever going to use again. You’ll be surprised at the amount of stuff that accumulates in the garage over the winter.

-Clean the windows. Remove all of the screens and wash both the outside of the windows and the screens. This is one of my favorite ways to spruce up the outside of my home. SO much dirt collects in between the window and the screen each year!

-Clean out your gutters. After the leaves fall from the trees in the fall your gutters can get pretty dirty.

-Plant flowers. Pull up any dead plants and plant flowers in your flower beds or put potted plants and bushes out in front of your house.

-Clearing away leaves, branches, and clutter

-Haul away or compost debris

-Re-edge and clean garden and flower beds

-Redefine the borders of the lawn

-Re-seed damaged areas of the lawn

-Pruning and trimming trees and shrubs

-Aeration & dethatching

-Mow the yard. Depending on when you start this checklist it may already be time to start mowing and w**d eating your yard.

Is it time to Insulate?
Having a professional seal your home's air leaks can make your home more comfortable, reduce the risk of moisture damage, improve indoor air quality and fire safety, and help to prevent frozen water pipes.
Heating and cooling account for 50 to 70% of the energy used in the average American home. Inadequate insulation and air leakage are leading causes of energy waste in most homes.
Insulation: saves money and our nation's limited energy resources,
makes your house more comfortable by helping to maintain a uniform temperature throughout the house, and
makes walls, ceilings, and floors warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
The amount of energy you conserve will depend on several factors: your local climate; the size, shape, and construction of your house; the living habits of your family; the type and efficiency of the heating and cooling systems; and the fuel you use. Once the energy savings have paid for the installation cost, energy conserved is money saved - and saving energy will be even more important as utility rates go up.

Energy saving Model is based on a basic 33x54 rectangle single story home built in the 1950's.

To schedule an Insulation Consult contact us anytime, and we'll be glad to show you much you can save by reducing your carbon foot print, and improving your quality of life. Most energy improvements pay for themselves in 4-5 years.

Spring has sprung, and the time has come to trade in the hot cocoa for pink lemonade, and kick off your boots for that favorite pair of flip-flops. Most of us tend to hibernate for the winter, dressing in layers and restricting activity to movies on the couch under a cozy blanket.
With spring's extra dose of sun comes a new boost of energy, and it's time to shake off those winter blues and get active again -- starting with the outside of your house, which is probably looking as weather-beaten and gray as you were feeling this winter. Here are some tips to help you get ready for your next Big summer back yard BBQ
