Sixteen years ago, when I took my business full-time, this was my very first decorating project.

I charged $500 to decorate my client’s mother’s bedroom.

Needless to say, I lost money on the project. Between the time, shopping, planning, styling, travel, and all the little details that go into making a room feel complete, I quickly learned that passion alone does not make a project profitable.

But I was so proud.

Proud to have a real project on the books.
Proud that someone trusted me.
Proud that I have taken the leap into full-time business ownership.

Looking back, this project taught me one of my earliest business lessons:

Your work has value, even when you are still growing.

Today, my design process, pricing, systems, and client experience look very different, but I will always appreciate this first project because it marked the beginning of my journey.

Sometimes the projects that don’t make you money still teach you lessons that shape your entire business.
