To monitor sustainability across our work, we asked our design teams to provide basic information on the materials in our work. With the data in hand, we can make strategic improvements, starting with our Materials Action Plan (MAP), which is helping our design teams act on the Common Materials Framework, a shared language for product sustainability developed by mindful materials. 
 
We now have 190 projects that report materials data through the AIA Materials Pledge using the Common Materials Framework, supporting shared industry disclosure.

As technology and environmental demands change, our work must continue to adapt and advance sustainable building practices. In this most recent report, we added seven new projects to our certified projects list, bringing our current total to 292. This total includes our first Living Future Zero Energy Certification™ for a project that also received an AIA COTE Top Ten Award last year.

2 for 2! Last week we congratulated our teams and clients on achieving LEED Platinum twice.

Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance marks Perkins Eastman’s 300th sustainably certification and 11th LEED Platinum project. The project further advances sustainability initiatives for the university. The design to ensures an inclusive and environmentally conscious space that harmonizes with its surroundings and campus community.

Computer Science Laboratories is constructed largely of mass timber and clad in a high-performance building envelope, the building is designed to be heated and cooled by ground source heat pumps located in a new regional district renewable energy plant. The building helps to advance the University’s ambitious carbon neutrality goals and become a model for the Commonwealth and beyond. This project is a first for the university’s campus.

In 2025, as a part of our AIA 2030 commitment, we achieved an average 60.2% predicted energy reduction against the 2003 Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) baseline. This reduction in energy demand is equivalent to turning off the power in 64,263,651 homes for one year. But there is more work to do, which is why 100% of our projects are energy modeled, and we are using this data to optimize our design strategies and improve our process.

Because our carbon impact is much larger than our energy savings, we have started tracking embodied carbon across our entire global portfolio of projects. As a result of implementing design strategies outlined in our Embodied Carbon Action Plan, we estimate that on average we have reduced embodied carbon by 15% from the Carbon Leadership Forum’s benchmarks.

Achieving carbon neutrality remains one of the most vital ways to address global warming. We achieve operational carbon neutrality by offsetting our Scope 1 (direct) and 2 (indirect) emissions. Although our Scope 3 (supply chain) emissions are largely beyond our control, we have offset our business travel for the first time this year. Our operational emissions are small compared to the impact of our design work, but improving these metrics is an important part of engraining sustainability into our culture.

Looking ahead, we are already in the process of reducing our emissions by developing a low-carbon transition plan.

The University of Southern California’s Dick Wolf Drama Center won a 2026 Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award for the adaptive reuse of the 1931 United University Church. The renovation exemplifies the transformative potential of adaptive reuse, achieving LEED Platinum certification through a careful integration of preservation and high-performance design including an all-electric system.

Constructed of brick with terra-cotta detailing and a sanctuary framed by heavy timber, the building is now home to the university’s drama department, located in a single located on its University Park Campus. The building boasts two theatres as well as innovative labs for media, sound, and design. Our team accepted the honor at the Conservancy’s annual awards ceremony, held in Los Angeles’s historic Ebell Theater.
