These are my favorite veggies to plant up an arch trellis—what are yours???

And it’s time to plant them all now—by seed directly sowing into the soil. All of these germinate fast and do BEST when direct sown vs transplanted.

When direct sowing, sow more seeds than you need plants. It’s insurance in case they don’t all come up.

Cucumber
🌿Space them 12 inches apart (I do 4 along my 4’ trellis)
🌿Plant 2-3 seeds per spot, then when the seedlings are a few inches tall, thin down to one plant
🌿Add all purpose granular fertilizer to planting spot

Pole beans (vining string beans)
🌿Space them 6” apart (I plant them every 3” and then thin down when they are a few inches tall)
🌿If your soil is rich, skip the fertilizer. Beans and peas have abundant nitrogen, and extra nitrogen in fertilizer can cause lots of leafy growth but delayed beans

Vining Centercut squash (or melon, butternut, etc)
🌿Space them about 16” along an arch (I do three along my 4’ arch)
🌿Plant 2-3 seeds per spot, then when the seedlings are a few inches tall, thin down to one plant
🌿Add all purpose granular fertilizer to planting spot

Spinach that sat under a FOOT OF SNOW this winter.
I over-winter spinach every year because it’s the healthiest, biggest-leaf spinach I have all year.
🌿Plant spinach seeds in August—>leave the seedlings all winter THEY DON’T NEED COVERING
then harvest all May

đŸ«œThere’s no getting around thinning your root vegetables. Radishes need 1-2” to size up properly.

đŸ«œSnip out the tops, and enjoy them as micro greens. They’re spicy delicious.

đŸ«œAnd don’t sleep on this job, because radishes grow very fast. They’re a wonderful crop to sow in between other crops because they take up so little space and we are harvesting them within one month of planting.

My 1-2-3 Intensive Planting method 👇

Don’t waste any space! Bring in all the pollinators! Companion planting is where it’s at babies!

1. Start with your main crops
2. Add in spring fillers
3. Reserve borders for herbs & flowers

Let’s break that down:

Main crops are in the garden almost all season: tomato, pepper, eggplant, cucumber, squash, brassicas, strawberry, potatoes, swaths of beet, carrot, and onion

Spring fillers are quick-growing roots and leafy baby greens: radish, turnip, lettuce, arugula, spinach, bok choy

Border herbs and flowers: chive, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage, marigold, sweet alyssum, nasturtium, calendula

The goal is a super full garden bed—PLANTS HAPPILY COMPANIONING

Do you plant this way?

A look back at some 2021 MARS custom-built kitchen gardens. If you’re thinking about installing a raised bed garden, we still have spots left in our ‘22 installation calendar. It’s filling though—so reach out through marskitchengarden.com and we can get a Consultation & Design on the calendar in January.

And we don’t check out when the building is done. I started this business to coach you though all aspects of kitchen gardening. So ask us back to help with planning, sourcing, planting, and maintenance. Here for it! I’ve coached nearly 100 neighbors across our Westchester and Fairfield counties since launching this business in January of 2020. There’s nothing like . Let us help. đŸŒ±
