In July I posted a short video of a silk georgette piece I completed for another artist who was embarking on a new direction in her work. I feel so fortunate that .ysabel chose me to join her in this new endeavor. When I first saw her work, a digital virtual world of astonishing energy and imagination, I was curious about how my rust and botanical textiles could be incorporated.
In talking we quickly realized what kindred spirits we are in our processes. Ysabel talked about the interconnectedness of everything, what seems random reveals its purpose if you quiet the mind and really look. Following no “plan” but instead tapping into the Flow, this is what makes the work…”receiving and connecting with life intelligence and seeking that connection always,” she says. Synthesizing modern technology and nature in this way feels like a beginning. I am happy to be part of this new beginning with an inspiring artist and new friend.
Since I began working with plants and rust, I have felt that to be a channel, a conduit, for Creation is my constant goal and practice in making art. I am a participant in the process and my ideas shift and change as the work progresses. Time is such a critical element. The plants and minerals have their own unpredictable process.
I am so thrilled with this collaboration. I don’t know Shar Peterson, but I appreciate her leather rod contribution very much. Working with skins is its own special process.
Ysabel describes me as a master eco-printer, which is generous and not how I would describe myself. I feel like a perpetual novice in everything I do. That sounds self-effacing but to be teachable, always, is simply a necessity.
More to come 🌿💡⚙️⏳🧡🤲
