As part of a larger renovation of this sprawling one-story dwelling in Orinda, CA, we reimagined the kitchen from the ground up. Walls and ceilings were opened to create flow, connect the kitchen to the rest of the home, and uncover long-hidden views of the California Bay Area landscape beyond.

It was a joy to work on a mid-century structure - to explore how we could respect the bones of the house while looking to mid century architects like Eichler and even Neutra to inform some of our design decisions.

Because this kitchen in our 1850 Residence won’t see daily, heavy use, we were able to choose materials for beauty above durability. The backsplash is fluted Calacatta marble—its ridged surface catching light and shadow, creating rhythm across the wall.
It’s less about standing up to endless cooking, more about creating a tactile surface that animates the room with light.

In this New Haven home, history is both preserved and reinterpreted. The original pointed window inspired the wood paneling that lines the stairwell. Even the banister’s light fixture carries a subtle echo of the same form, creating a dialogue between old and new.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to work so close to home on historic residences —where every detail offers a chance to honor the past while shaping the present.

Sometimes the most transformative details are also the quietest.

In our Fifth Avenue pied-à-terre, a pair of sliding pocket doors disappear into a custom oak-clad wall, shifting the experience of the home with a single gesture.

Closed, the door maintains privacy for the bedroom beyond. Open, it creates an effortless connection between living, dining, and rest — all framed by stone, oak, and views of Manhattan.

At the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, La mode est une fête celebrates the daring originality of Paul Poiret. Among the highlights, his exquisite folding screens remind us that beauty and function need not be separate. They are works of art—ornamental yet practical, full of color, pattern, and imagination—that turn everyday objects into enduring expressions of style.

In our 1850 Residence, rather than replicate the original arched openings in full ornament, we reinterpreted them with restraint. The curve remains—a gesture to the home’s heritage—while the trim is simplified, its profile drawn from details elsewhere in the house- in this case the front arched doorway. A quiet nod to 1910, expressed with a more contemporary clarity.

At The Met with my son, we stumbled into the Arms and Armor rooms—where the saddles were incredible works of art. A reminder that inspiration can be found everywhere.

I love decorative lighting—especially when it captures the spirit of an era with clarity and conviction. This 1927 chrome table lamp by Donald Deskey is a masterclass in early American industrial design: precise, confident, and unapologetically sculptural.

Taking a moment to sketch this morning. Drawing has always been a centering activity for me. Once I’ve sketched something I can remember the details forever and I’d like to think the details find their way into our design work - sometimes in subtle ways. This is a door k**b from the Waldorf Astoria in NYC. Beautifully proportioned with a lovely relief pattern 💫

From initial sketches to our construction sites, we remain deeply involved with the homes we work on. Each phase is a dialogue—between vision and craft, past and present and creativity and the realities of the built environment. We are so grateful to our teams who work with us to navigate the process!
