It was a spectacular day here in Sunnyside and we had the pleasure of pruning trees all day at the Colonial Court common space. The folks at the garden were concerned about the low hanging branch on this Siberian elm, which had gotten even lower during the last few months (before photo on top). But they liked the shade it provided and I was reluctant to fully remove such a significant portion of the tree. As you can see, a major end weight reduction elevated the branch significantly. We also reduced the density in the middle canopy to encourage interior sprouting on that low branch. Some additional support for that branch, like a prop or cables, could be a good idea in the future and they are considering it. Just one highlight of a productive and lovely day.

Last week I had the pleasure of working in this nice red oak with a decent view! This one and their horse chestnut are looking much happier after pruning. We also did some forensic research on google maps to discover that both trunks were buried in three feet of soil after previous owners' renovations raised the grade about eight years ago. Not good! Don't do that! but we are working on mitigating. Thanks to my buddy Ethan and homeowners Alex and Sierra for a fantastic day of tree work.

Setup for a partial removal of this Ailanthus altissima ("Tree of Heaven") in a Greenpoint backyard. Spotted lanternfly honeydew was turning the client's patio into a sheet of sooty mold, so we removed the branches hanging on his side of the property line. (SLF reproduces in and feeds off of this tree.) Normally wouldn't be into such a drastic reduction because it compromises the tree's longevity, but these trees aren't doing great things for our ecosystem. "After" photo coming soon.

Colorado Blue Spruce! Picea pungens is pretty common here in NYC, though it is native to a pretty different alpine climate in the Rocky Mountains. A client in Maspeth asked for help with these specimens which displayed tip dieback at the top and a fair amount of sap and dying branches on the interior. On closer inspection, the tree generally looked healthy. The sap and interior branch decline are pretty normal, especially considering the amount of shade these lower branches were getting. Thankfully I found no other evidence of disease in the canopy apart from that unfortunate top bit.

The last few years have been really tough on evergreens that are acclimated to colder, wetter winters and milder, dryer summers. Like people, when trees are stressed, their defenses against disease is weakened; when they're healthier, their defenses are stronger. We decided that the best course of action was to bolster the tree's health with regular watering and a healthy layer of mulch and to monitor the course of disease. I'm confident in the trees' natural abilities to fend off the disease and I'm happy to have avoided chemical treatment, which is really a last resort. (I would have also pruned out the diseased top, but the client opted to keep it.)

Before and after on a storm-damaged black cherry tree in a Sunnyside Gardens back yard. Client asked me to clean up the tear-out and inspect the tree, no other pruning needed. Closeup of decay that cased the major branch to fail. The rest of the tree seems in pretty good shape. I also cleaned up the downed branch and happily gifted the fragrant cherry wood debris to 45th street composters around the corner. Nice Saturday morning!
