Today is my last day as the Dean of the School of Constructed Environments at Parsons, completing the 3-year term. I am honored to have served Parsons's students, staff, and faculty, guided by a mission of centering regenerative material practices at the core of the school’s pedagogy. I am pleased that Prof. Cotter Christian is rotating into this position, and Prof. Daniel Michalik will continue as the Associate Dean. This fall, I will be on sabbatical, engaging in architectural and research projects at LTL Architects, continuing the climate-based, creative work encapsulated in Manual of Biogenic House Sections, before returning to faculty in the spring.
I am deeply appreciative of the collaboration created by the SCE program directors – Martina Kohler, Carly Cannell, Barent Roth, Adegboyega Adefope, Michele Gorman, Craig Bernecker, Yvette Chaparro, and Allyson McDavid, and staff – Lori Maffucci, Dalia Elhassan, Lina Yasmine Chaoui, and Bethany Camarati – many of whom are captured in this photograph at graduation. I am grateful to the faculty, and the students of SCE for their tireless work in creating more integrated, equitable, and delightful worlds over these last three years.
I offer thanks and continued support to the Deans of Parsons – Ben Barry, Cynthia Lawson Jaramillo, Rory O’Dea, Sam Mejias, Shana Agid, Kelly Grossi, Antonia Craig, Tanesha Jemison, and Yvonne Watson – for your shared leadership in these interesting times, underscoring the important work done at Parsons, fundamentally changing the future through a progressive design education rooted in compassion, material innovation, and radical pragmatism.
