We believe this can be counterbalanced with sensible landscape design and practices that create havens for nature in all of it's forms. We are proud to say that almost everything we purchase for our landscaping projects is repurposed, up-cycled, or, at the very worst, recycled. Almost nothing is ever thrown in the garbage.

For example, every week we end up with anywhere from a few dozen to hundreds of the black nursery pots that plants come in, ranging from 1-quart containers all the way up to 15+ gallon pots. Every couple of weeks, I post in local gardening groups and community pages letting people know they are available for free pickup. I even have a text list to send to certain people!

The response is always fantastic. Gardeners use them for propagation and transplanting, small nurseries put them back into circulation, and some even find their way to local farms ( Rowanwood Farm comes by on a continual basis to help grow food for the needy

If your Sedum 'Autumn Joy' (or similar varieties) looks like this, it is often a sign that it is being overwatered, overfertilized, planted in overly rich soil, or not receiving enough sunlight. Sedums thrive in dry, well-drained, relatively infertile soil and prefer full sun. In other words, don't coddle these plants. 🙂

We see this a bit too often in some of the gardens we visit.

NOTE: As with most plants, newly planted sedums do need supplemental water while they establish, and they may need occasional watering during periods of extreme drought. Once established, however, they generally perform best when left alone.

When I water or fertilize my gardens, I simply skip over the established sedums.

This exciting new native landscape is really starting to take shape. Once complete, the garden will feature 10 native trees, 40 native shrubs, and more than 500 native perennials, creating a diverse and vibrant habitat for birds, bees, butterflies, other pollinators, and the larvae that many species depend on to complete their life cycles.

After spending considerable time clearing out invasive plants and preparing the site, we began bringing this vision to life. We also created a walking trail that will provide access to the lower levels of the property, allowing the homeowners to fully enjoy and experience the landscape as it matures over the coming seasons.

It's amazing to see the transformation already underway. Before-and-after photos coming soon!

Before and After Photos.

Once the new terraces were completed, these clients wanted a native garden that would attract birds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects, provide host plants for larvae, and, of course, look beautiful while complementing the new stonework and home.

We incorporated a single pink dogwood as a focal point, along with inkberry and dwarf Alberta spruce to provide evergreen structure and soften the walls. Additional plantings included northern bush honeysuckle, New Jersey tea, blueberries, and other deciduous shrubs, as well as nearly 200 perennial plants selected for seasonal interest and ecological value.

To finish the project, we applied heat-treated brown mulch throughout the garden beds, creating a clean, cohesive appearance while helping to retain moisture and suppress w**ds.

We will be performing regular maintenance on this garden, so updated pics to be posted in time.

Landscape Revamping:

This home had a previous landscaper install a garden, but the design and choice of plants were poor. Yellow iris had been planted everywhere and were spreading aggressively, hostas were planted in full sun, and perennials with the same color and flowering time were placed right next to each other. The boxwoods were dying, and overall, it was just a poor design with a lot of yellow and very little color or bio-diversity.

They did choose some butterfly w**d (Asclepias tuberosa), which was great to see!

We dug up a couple of the shrubs and rearranged them to free up some bed space, removed the boxwoods, dug up and removed 90% of the yellow iris, transplanted the hostas to the shady backyard, and dug up several of the ferns and many of the other perennials.

We then added four Inkberry ‘Shamrock’ to replace the boxwoods, along with several new perennials including New Vintage White Yarrow, Liatris spicata ‘Alba’, Liatris spicata ‘Kobold’, Marshall’s Delight Bee Balm, Heliopsis ‘Burning Hearts’, and several other additions. We also replanted and rearranged the existing perennials we had dug up, integrating them with the new plants to create a more cohesive design.

Finally, we cut a new edge into the lawn and topped everything off with natural heat-treated mulch, creating a more beautiful, diverse, and visually pleasing landscape overall.

We are looking for a few reliable individuals to join our landscape installation crew on a part-time basis (approximately 25+ hours per week) with chance of future increased hours.

Responsibilities include:
-Unloading and organizing plants
-Moving plant material around job site
-Digging, planting, and transplanting
-Mulching and invasive plant removal
-Weeding and general garden maintenance
--Ongoing care of established gardens
Installation of small garden structure
-NO lawn cutting, we ONLY design & Install landscapes
-Undoing and loading tools and equipment
-Small paver and construction jobs
-Able to move and lift around 50 lbs+

Details:
-Typical workdays are around 6 hours
--Job sites are within approximately 15 miles of Newtown
Must have reliable transportation to meet at project locations

Qualifications:
-Landscaping or gardening experience is a plus, but not required
-Willing to train the right candidates
-Must be over 17 years of age
-Good communication skills

Compensation:
-Hourly pay based on experience and availability
-Competitive starting rate, with raises throughout season for good work
